A university don, Dr. Sebastian Okafor, in the Department of Mass Communication, Enugu State University of Science and Technology ESUT, says making the right policies and guiding students properly are important steps toward a better society.

Dr. Okafor made the call on Wednesday while featuring as the guest lecturer at a one-day Leadership Summit held at the Prof Julius Onah Auditorium at ESUT, Agbani

He explained that policies work best when they focus on real problems in different areas. “If you want a policy on education, you must first look at what is not working. The same goes for health. You need to ask: Who is making the policy – are they experts, are they active in their field?” he said.

He added that being an expert is not enough. “A doctor who is not practicing may not help much with health policy, just like a teacher who is not active in academics may not help with education policy.

He suggested that people who are really working in each field should come together to make policies that actually solve problems.

On the essence of the Leadership Summit, Dr. Okafor said it was a good step. “Students need guidance and orientation. If they learn the right values, like honesty, accountability, and the need to work collaboratively, they can help make the society better,” he said.

On his part, the convener of the Summit, Chikezie Emmanuel, a student union leader, representing the Mass Communication Department, said he organised the summit because he believes that the youths should be well-guided if they must attain their leadership goals

Dr Okafor with ESUT Monitor Reporters after the programme on Wednesday

“If you ask me what inspires me, I will just say the need for a better Nigeria. I want a country where students, leaders, will bring the desideratum of what we need the make the country better. Few years from now, the leadership responsibilities of this great nation will be on our shoulders and if we don’t start now to catch the young leaders, teach them what we need to know about leadership from now, how do we think we can achieve this later? I want students and young leaders to know what is needed from the start. We cannot wait for the future to train leaders,” he said.

He thanked his classmates, lecturers, and students for their support.

“I really appreciate the effort of Mass Communication Department lecturers and students, my course mates, Year 3 class, for coming out en massive and their support. Some persons have been sending money, wishes, and support prayers. Many people sent money, wishes, and prayers. I really appreciate everyone who came out to help,” he added.

Senator Emmanuel faced challenges in organizing the summit. “It was not easy, especially with money. We relied on personal contributions from supportive students,”

At the end of the summit, he gave students an important message: “Every youth is a student, but not every student is a youth. Go home and promote good leadership. Be a positive force for change in Nigeria.”

Professors at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been enjoined to prioritize academic excellence by embarking on research that will impact society.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, made this known on Thursday during the University’s 37th inaugural lecture presented by Prof. Chioma Oleka, at the Prof. Julius Onah Auditorium, ESUT campus, Agbani.

Represented by his deputy, Prof. Chike Nwoha, the VC stated that there is a need for senior academics to conduct society-impactful research that would form their inaugural lecture, which will confirm them as academic lords.

He posited that it would be infantile for professors not to do so because they would not be accorded the necessary respect required of their status in the academic environment.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the University will always support senior academic staff who are ready to undertake such research.

The 37th ESUT inaugural lecture, presented by Prof. Chioma Oleka, centered on the impact of Naira exchange rate depreciation on economic growth, causes, effects, and ways forward.

With an instinct on content building/ enrichment and proactiveness the desire for hosting the 1ST International conference of Accountancy Department was born.

Like a seed planted on rich soil the Department’s desire to present an academic forum that will not just grow scholarship but expand the scope of collaborations between the gown and town was nurtured.

In their initial letter requesting for approval for the Conference having risen from the 1st Departmental Board of the year held in January 2024 where the board deligently x-rayed the imperatives of hosting a conference of this nature, the board rose in high hopes and unquencheable resolve to walk the talk towards actualization.

The Head of Accountancy Department, ESUT,
Professor Uche Lucy Onyekwelu provides insights on why the Department is hosting a maiden International Conference. Below are the excepts:

STEPS TO CONCRETISE THE CONFERENCE:

At the meeting held in January the Board rose with a resolution and mandated the Board Secretary to quickly make a letter proposing as agreed to the Management of ESUT through the Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Chioma Oleka.

The letter was quickly construed and forwarded to the appropriate authorities. To our utter amazement the authorities did not just welcome the idea but prayed for its massive success.

Thinking through the system the Academic Board of the Department was dissolved into committees with each of the committees led by Scholars with distinct flare for the each committees accorded them. There ship anchored and navigated through.

Prof Lucy Uche Onyekwelu, HOD, Accountancy Department

Committees thinkering and synergizing prompted up on unquenchable desire for accomplishments became rekindled that all that runs in the blood of the Academics, Non Teaching , Post Graduate and even the Undergraduate Students is the International Conference due in July 2nd & 3rd 2024.

KEY RESOURCE PERSONS TO LEAD THE DISCUSSIONS:

A close look at the Team to lead in the interactions in the Conference shows that the Department did not just source for who to talk but succeeded in getting the Square Pegs into the Square Holes.

You believe with me that when leaders and experts who thinkered out templates for policies and also saw through the implementations discuss issues your guess is as good as mine.

In the line up of these revered the Resource persons is The Diamond President of ICAN the respected Chief DSC Alaribe FCA shall deliver the first key- note address First Keynote Speech , followed by the Dr. Rabiu Olowo who is the Executive Secretary of Financial Reporting Council, the Apex body saddled with regulations of Financial Reporting in Nigeria. Our own dear Professor Uche Austin Nweze, PhD FCA FCTI JP Immediate Past Rector of IMT a widely travelled and content building academic will do us the 3rd keynote speech..

The Department has also sourced exceptionally quintessential scholars to enrich the contents of the discussion through Lead Paper presentations. While Dr. Friday Akpan FCNA, FCTI will pilot the ship of the Lead Paper Presenters. To cap it up the Lead and Coordinating Director of Financial Reporting Council Group propelling Sustainability Dr. Iheanyi Anyahara, FCA, FCTI will deliver another lead paper on Sustainability Reporting.

To show the true content of a conference that is multifaceted , Professor Mannixs Paul from the USA will be doing us a paper as a Guest Speaker with speciality in AI, Sustainability and Cyber Security.

From the above it is not in doubt at all that the Department of Accountancy working with its Topnotçh Planning Committee is sure set out to shake up the landscape of Intellectual discussions and content building through the Maiden International Conference.

QUEST FOR GETTING OTHERS ON BOARD:

The Department in its nature knew that it needs to congregate other global scholars to enable it achieve the much desired aroma of “International”. In that light a platform was created to accommodate all and most of everyone who had got anything to do with its members over the years in research and scholarship. For example the platform named 1ST International Conference Forum which I call “Conference before Conference” has ran for a month or so at moment. The essence of that platform is to basically stimulate awareness for the Maiden International Conference, accept concerns as well as resolve problem any impending challenges of scholars who intend to participate in the conference.

In that platform are congregated a lot of top notch academia/ industry as well as policy Makers who are interested in Research. The Congregation cuts across diverse Academic and Industry in Nig and diaspora.

Another platform was also created for the Alumni of this Department as critical stakeholders in the Department..

True to its purpose this platform have seen concerns shared and real time on line resolutions done.

To the Glory of God the Platform has received more than One Hundred and Twenty(120) papers with a good number of co-authors attached to each of the papers.

WHY CONFERENCE ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING NOW:

This Theme of the Conference has been adjudged topical by many scholars. As we talk a good number of resource persons still request to be accommodated in the scheme of things. Their desire is not out of place but reminiscent anyone who has found a gold and wish to be among those to commence sharing. To that extent we applaud and say big welcome to them. Indeed the Conference Committee shall work out modalities to accommodate and offer every desirous Resource persons opportunity to ventilate and diffuse the contents they bear for our intellectual enrichment..

Students of ESUT

To the specifics AI and Sustainability Reporting have got big roles to play in future or even future landscape defining Accounting Business Management, Social Sciences, Medicine , Agriculture , Law and every discipline.

The Department of Accountancy ESUT decided to embark on this very challenging venture not for anything but to help offer a timely , well articulated and enriching avenue to retool and upscale its members ( students and lecturers) as well as provide endless opportunities to knowledge cross- breeding with scholars from other institutions.

The Department is not oblivion of the fact that allowing the AI Concept to come on it without preparation could impact the endless potentialities of its human resources. So it decided to lead from the front in anchoring this programme. The Department is also quite hopeful that the contents scholars will bear after this will go a long way in assisting them expand their abilities of intellectual thinking and upscale its problems solving potentials..

The Department also hopes that the conference will navigate its members and other lecturers, Postgraduates and undergraduates adaptations through the synergies expected through conference.

PREPARATIONS SO FAR:

The Department has accomplished a lot through its earlier constituted communities. the Committees are still working tirelessly to see that all knots and bolts are properly fixed. For example a team of the Planning Committee comprising the HOD, Professor Oliver Ike Inyiama, Chairman Planning Committee and the Co-Chairman Planning Assoc. Prof Ike Ezeugwu were at Urban Radio yesterday where they further elucidated on the Imperative of the forthcoming conference and why every scholar must be part of it.

We therefore pray all those that have submitted papers or indicated interest to make it a date with History.

The place of AI and Sustainability Reporting cannot be over emphasized.

The future belongs to those who prepare to meet opportunities.

The Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Command has charged students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT to shun cultism, social vices as well as academic and life carryovers while pursuing their academic endeavours

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO Enugu command, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made the charge while delivering a speech on the 2023/2024 ESUT Orientation Programm for first year students on Wednesday.

Speaking during the programme held at the prestigious Prof Julius Onah Auditorium, DSP Ndukwe admonished the year one students to define their focus and remain resolute in actualizing their educational aspiration.

He advised the students to shun every act capable of making them to stray away from the purpose for which they were in the institution and warned that no act of crime and criminality would go unpunished.

“Beyond academic, you are here to learn many things and it is in the process of learning that alot happen. Be contended with what you have.

“I am interested in what you do and how you go about the opportunities you have here. There are challenges but I urge you to be contended with what you have, don’t live fake life. Don’t measure with anybody. The competition in life is between you and yourself.

“There is no hidding place for criminals. You can get away with it but we usually say ’99 days for the thief and one day for the owner of the house’ you may run for long but when we catch you, we will bring both heaven and hell fire judgment on your head.

A section of year one students during the orientation programme on Wednesday

“One thing I want to remind you is that most time people that will lead you into cultism will come in a very soft manner. They don’t use force anymore. The time they were using force has gone. Today it could be one sweet guy who is your friend, who have been relating with you and he has been extending good manners to you, buying things and the rest of them. Eventually, when you have enjoyed so much from him or her, to say no to their request becomes difficult.

“You must begin to learn, choose your friends. You will help us to police you better. Know where you go. I am not saying you should not enjoy life but know the limit and extent you can enjoy. I encourage you, shun cultism, don’t allow anybody to force or lure you into it, shun social vices. Don’t learn those things that will end up breaking you forever,” he said.

The orientation programme marked the commencement of activities marking the 43rd Matriculation Ceremony of the University which holds on Friday, February 23, 2024.

Over 5000 students have been offered admission to study various courses in the institution for the current academic session.
