Agbani – The Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) officially welcomed new students into its academic community during their 44th matriculation ceremony.

The event was presided over by the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Prof who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, marked the formal admission of students for the 2024/2025 academic session on Friday.

In his address, Professor Okolie congratulated the matriculating students for securing admission amidst intense competition. He reaffirmed ESUT’s commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and character development, urging students to adhere strictly to university regulations. He also emphasized the institution’s zero-tolerance policy on cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and other forms of indiscipline.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, the Vice-Chancellor mentioned enhancements in water supply, electricity, and hostel accommodations. He encouraged students to actively participate in extracurricular activities, particularly sports, where ESUT has excelled in national and zonal competitions. He also announced that students maintaining a CGPA of 4.50 and above would be eligible for tuition-free education as an incentive for academic excellence.

This year’s matriculation was conducted in a decentralized format, a move aimed at fostering closer relationships between students and their faculties.

Professor Uche Ugwuanyi, in an interview with ESUT Monitor highlighted the benefits of the new approach, stating that it allows students to better identify with their departments and connect with their lecturers.

The Matriculants are already in Love with ESUT Monitor

“It also enables parents to locate their children’s faculties and departments more easily, making access to academic resources more efficient,” he noted. Describing the event as highly successful, Professor Ugwuanyi expressed satisfaction with the atmosphere, stating, “The entire school is glowing with excitement. Students are happy with the trend of things, and we are proud to host this milestone event.”

For many students, the matriculation ceremony was a moment of joy and reflection. Ujunwa Faith Omere, a Mass Communication student, described the occasion as a significant milestone. “Matriculation is a celebration for me entering into Year One at the university, and I am happy. ESUT is one of the best schools. It is okay, and all the lecturers are nice to students, especially Mr. Maxwell Ngene.”

However, some students acknowledged the challenges of adapting to university life. Obasi Ngozi Elizabeth, another fresh student, shared her early experiences. “It hasn’t been easy. Firstly, Agbani sun is so hot, and then trying to buy books, begging course reps for the littlest things, and handling lots of assignments has been stressful,” she said.

For parents, the event was an emotional and proud moment. Mrs. Ani Ifeinenye, whose child was among the matriculants, expressed her joy. “It is a very beautiful moment. I am happy, proud, and grateful to God because it’s not easy to have a child matriculating today. It is a thing of joy, and I bless God for it,” she said.

Speaking on why she chose ESUT for her child, Mrs. Ani praised the university for its ability to prepare students for real world challenges. “ESUT is a ‘jungle school’ a place where students are trained to be tough and resilient. When a child passes through ESUT, they can face society confidently. There is no place they will go and not be able to scale through,” she remarked.

The 44th matriculation ceremony at ESUT was a memorable event, symbolizing the beginning of an academic journey for the fresh students. With optimism and determination, they are set to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in their pursuit of academic excellence.

The Head, Department of Mass Communication, ESUT, Barr Dr Chidiebere Ezinwa has on behalf of the Editorial Board of the ESUT Monitor Newspaper, expressed gratitude to the readers of the University’s flagship newspaper, the management and entire university community for their sustained readership and support in the outgoing year.

The HOD who disclosed this in his Christmas and New Year message on Wednesday, expressed gratitude to the student-reporters and all who are working tirelessly particularly behind the scene to sustain the ESUT Monitor Newspaper.

Dr Ezinwa acknowledged that without the expanding readership of the newspaper and unquenchable support from the management, the ESUT Monitor Newspaper (EMN) wouldn’t have attained its status as “the authoritative voice of the university community”

“On behalf of EMN, the HOD, Mass Communication Department extends his gratitude to our numerous readers, staff, students and entire management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology for their kind support to EMN which accounts for its gradual growth from strength to strength.

Members of the ESUT Monitor Newspaper Editorial Team

“Most importantly, I want to appreciate the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie and his team in ensuring the restoration of our radio station, ESUT Radio, 106.5FM.

Prof Ortuanya of Law had his seat preserved for him same as Prof Nicholas Attamah of Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Prof Uche Ugwuanyi was unanimously elected, unopposed, as Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences.

Also elected as a sole candidate is Prof Umezurike Hughes Okafor of Faculty of Clinical Medicine as well as Dr Ozor Ignatius of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences

Interestingly, the elections were unable to produce a female dean, this in contrast to at least three female deans that were elected during the 2022 deanship elections.

ESUT Monitor can authoritatively report that the elections of the new deans in 12 out of 13 Faculties in the university were peaceful and resulted generally accepted by all including those who lost their elections.

Prof Nicholas Attamah was re-elected Dean Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, unopposed

Speaking with ESUT Monitor on the conduct of the election at Faculty of Education, Prof Martins Anikwe who represented the Vice-Chancellor and superintended over the election said it was democracy in action.

Describing the Faculty of Education election as a tight race, the former Commissioner for Agriculture in Enugu State said the majority spoke which is the beauty of democracy.

“We have witnessed democracy here. The Dean Elect won with just two votes ahead of his closest opponent and that is the beauty of democracy. It was transparently conducted in an orderly manner and all the voters and candidates conducted themselves very well.

“To me, the only winner is the faculty. They should unite and move the faculty ahead. The time of election is over, it is now time to work. We are happy with the outcome of the election here, we will now go and write our report and submit to the management,” he said.

The Interview session was anchored by Precious Nwafor, Entertainment Editor. Excerpts

Brief profile

I am Professor Uche Ugwuanyi, from Accountancy Department, Enugu State University of Science and Technology. I am the current director ESUT entrepreneurship development Centre

Of what importance is Entrepreneurship Development to ESUT?

It is of high importance, for the fact that you’re a student of this school, the kind of skills we will teach you both the soft and the technical, will go a long way to help you in your future endeavours. Entrepreneurship study is central in helping students to actualise their skills and be self-sustaining.

A graduate of this university just won seven hundred thousand naira in entrepreneurship skills while serving in Edo State. She passed through the school and the centre.

Does the centre fund students with entrepreneurship skills?

At present, we don’t fund student with entrepreneurship skills, but if we see anything that is convincing in such student, we can approach the management, plead and see whether they can support the student. We can also approach the state government to see how they can support with funding such students with that entrepreneurship skills that can help the external people

We used to see ESUT bread in the market, what happened?

It is still there, as you were coming you saw a lot of our Faculty coordinators, they came to present the bills, each of them presented their bills for the practicum that will take off next week. The people in charge of food and confectioneries, made mention of bread, meat pie, cake, ice cream, small chops. In fact, before the end of March, I will supply this interview with pictorial evidences of what they produced, each of them. It has been there since, maybe is because of the fact that we didn’t have enough fund to run it on a daily basis.

Are there any breakthrough in the centre with regards to innovation?

There are so many breakthroughs, we have a lot of ESUT graduates doing well in their various entrepreneurial endeavours. The case of Obiero Miracle is a recent one. We have a lot of them out there and we plan to produce more.

What are the challenges facing the centre?

There are a lot of challenges, as we speak now we don’t have an office for entrepreneurship Centre, but the current Vice-Chancellor has promised to complete the Entrepreneurship Development Centre building in the school. The EDC Centre is a very gigantic building opposite the School of Postgraduate Studies.

Is there any particular date for the commencement of the practicum?

Definitely, one of the things we have done is articulation of different budgets from different coordinators. I’m going to present the bill to the Vice-Chancellor. By the special grace of God, if he approves it graciously, we will start the implementation next week.

Are the students going to pay for the practical?

No. You’ve already paid for your practical, the only thing you would do for us is when the product is out in the market, encourage the students to buy them. I’m happy you made mention of ESUT bread, the buns, the meat pie and so many others, they will be sold at a subsidized price

How is your work as a director of entrepreneurship development centre?

Very tasking, as you can see we’ve been up and doing to make sure that you students are at the end of the day will go home with entrepreneurship skills, both the soft and the technical skills that will enable you to stand on your own. Like this issue of Practicum we are starting next week, students will learn a lot, depending on the areas you want to venture into

The practicum will be decentralized, department-by-department. We have so many coordinators for each department.
