… ESUT VC’s Wife fetes kids, urges them to be obedient

The Admiral Resort Hotel, Enugu was the venue on Friday venue for the 2025 Christmas party for staff kids of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, who turned up in numbers.

The Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie,  in his remarks expressed  fulfilment that the staff of ESUT were beginning to understand the gains of university community relationship as evidenced by the massive attendance and participation of staff children in this second edition of the ESUT Staff Children’s Christmas party.

Prof Okolie emphasized that his administration started the Christmas party for ESUT Staff Children, aged 0 to 12 last  year, in order to foster community life which is lacking in the University.

“The kids need to know themselves as well as their parents who are working in the same university'” he said.

The wife of the ESUT Vice Chancellor, Lady Uchenna Okolie, who was flanked by  wives of other principal officers of the University, used the occasion to urge staff children of ESUT, to be respectful and obedient to their parents, teachers and the society at large.

Lady Okolie who is the Chief Host of the party noted that respect and obedience were the hallmarks of well trained children,  enjoining them to use the season of Christmas to show love and give charity to the less privileged in the society.

She further stated that Christmas is equally a period of thanksgiving to God for his provisions, guidance and security, adding that Christmas, being a period to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, should be celebrated with joy and happiness.

“I am happy and honored to share the joy of Christmas with you today. Christmas is a time of joy and thanksgiving to God. It is a time to share what you have with people around you.

“A well-trained child is known by his character and respectful behaviour. Wherever you go, whether at home, in school or in any gathering, let people see the light of Christmas in you through your good manners, ” the soft-spoken wife of the ESUT Vice Chancellor said.

The  Christmas party for staff children he said, is aimed at “bringing the university community together, so that we can celebrate and use the opportunity to pray for our children.

Some people seem to  misunderstand what we are doing.

It was when we discovered that the community aspect is lacking in the University that the Management decided to take a number of steps,” he explained.

According to the Vice Chancellor, part of the steps are the  Staff Children’s Christmas party and the ESUT Senior Staff Club.

The VC with a Staff during the party

The Senior Staff Club offers  staff opportunities to  interact freely with   their superiors and colleagues and bond with one another in a convivial community atmosphere.

Due to it’s  obvious benefits in the promotion of healthy community relationships in the university,  Prof Okolie assured of  Management’s continued support to sustain and improve on the annual Christmas get together for ESUT Staff Children  for the greater interest of the University.

This second edition had some distinctive features as it witnessed greater numbers of staff children that attended.

Also in attendance were some Deans of Faculties, Directors, Professors, HODs, and a good number of teaching and non teaching staff who brought their children to the party.

The party featured gifts presentation from Santa Claus, music and dancing, quizzes,  intelligent games competition and  entertainment.

It was truly a Christmas party to remember for the ESUT Staff Children.

In its pragmatic desire to march theory with practical knowledge in advancing experiential learning, the Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof Aloysius-Michaels Okolie will on Thursday commission the university’s Incubation Hub.

The VC who disclosed this to ESUT Monitor on Wednesday, said unveiling of the  Incubation Hub marks a mileage in the management’s derive to give the students, irrespective of courses of choice, practical knowledge that will not only make them self-reliant but employable.

Prof Okolie noted that having acquired the building from Afrihub few years ago, the Incubation Hub has been equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment to offer students hands-on training and experiential learning.

“Tomorrow we shall be commissioning ESUT Incubation Hub. Formerly Afrihub, the idea of commissioning it is to ensure certification of our students so that before you get to your 3rd year, you are already largely independent financially because of the knowledge you have acquired. In you 3rd year, the industry should be looking for you not you looking for them.

“We want to encourage hands-on and experiential learning model in our university and take the lead. Part of the things we want to take-off in the 2025/2026 is to collaborate with industries so that they will be coming to the University from time to time, to engage with the students on practicals. We want to bring the town and the gown together and. It

“From next session, students from year one will be divided into project research groups and given topics to start working on from day one. So that by the time they are leaving the university, they would have added value. We don’t want the same garbage in, garbage out in our system, we want a change. This place is Enugu State University of Science and Technology, we want to activate the technological virtues we have,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie has emphasised that presentation of inaugural lecture by professor in the university is compulsory even as he anticipates that ESUT targets to deliver its 50th inaugural lecture this year.

Professor Okolie who disclosed this in his opening address during the 44th Inaugural lecture of ESUT on Thursday, April 3rd, 2025, said that Inaugural lecture is a key component of professorial ranking stating that a professor who didn’t deliver his inaugural lecture is an “ordinary professor”.

“I am always very happy each time am involved in this process, basically, inaugural lecture is a reflection that the day you will do it is the day you will announce that you have arrived within the committee of academics.

“You can be promoted as a Professor and if you retire without doing the inaugural lecture, you will be a retiring salary earner professor, but if you conclude your inaugural lecture, you will now be classified as a Distinguished Professor of that university.

“Whatever that is making a Professor not present inaugural lecture sometimes manifests in what the person has to tell the public. So if you don’t have anything to tell the public, please don’t present inaugural lecture.

“People are now answering doctors, even traditional rulers are now coming for Honourary Doctorate Awards, the medicine practitioners at the local villages are now answering doctors. You have seen that some politicians are now equally answering professors.

Procession during the 45th inaugural lecture on Thursday, April 10, 2025

“So the only thing that will make you distinct from such people is to put Distinguished against your name.

“I will not give anybody that didn’t present inaugural lecture, if need be, contract or adjunct, I will give only to distinguished academics. Inaugural Lecture is very compulsory, we don’t joke with it. That’s why we are so glad today we are already moving so fast, 44th and 45th is holding on April 10th, 46th on May 10th.

“Our prayer is that this year, we must move beyond 50, ESUT is over 30 years, even if it is one a year we would have gone beyond this, so we must hit by the end of the year 50 or beyond 50.

“Remember last December, Management had to host Distinguished Professors for a banquet, we didn’t host Professors, we hosted Distinguished Professors to a banquet,” he stated.

As at the time of this report, Prof Charles Chime is delivering the 45th inaugural Lecture of at the Peter Ndubuisi Mbah Auditorium while Professor Uchenna Ekwochi will deliver the 46th edition on Thursday, 10th May, 2025 at the College of Medicine Auditorium, Parklane, Enugu State.

Public presentation of a book authored by the Inaugural Lecturer, Distinguished Prof Ogbuoshi

“Inaugural lecture announces a professor’s arrival within the academics. You can be promoted as a professor but if you retire without doing inaugural lecture, you will be a retiring salary earning professor. But if you have delivered your inaugural lecture, you will now be classified as a Distinguished Professor of that University. Whatever manifest in a professor not doing inaugural lecture manifests in what the person tells the public. If you don’t have anything to tell the public, please don’t present inaugural lecture.

“As a way of encouraging professors to present inaugural lecture, management has been releasing N850, 000 to the inaugural lecturers to aid the production and process. The Chairman of Council in the last Council meeting affirmed that thenceforth he will be giving N1, 000 000 to each inaugural lecturer. As a mark of support to the Chairman, Sir Engr. I.I. Akuve added N500, 000. That means N1.5 million. So going forward, every inaugural lecturer, including the last one and today’s, will receive N1.5 million from the fund. Even if you don’t want to present your inaugural lecture, let this fund attract you to make your presentation,” the VC said.

Highlights of the inaugural lecture were presentation of certificate, award and 50 copies of the Lecture to the Inaugural lecturer, Professor Linus Ogbuoshi, as well as public presentation of a book written by the Lecturer.

The Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has canvassed of an inter-exchange of lecturers among all universities in Enugu State.

The VC disclosed this during an interaction with ESUT Monitor. He explained that the idea became necessary in view of the need to not only cross-fertilise ideas among the universities but it will also help in no small measure to upgrade the lecturers.

Professor Okolie added that apart from discussing the idea with his counterpart at Godfrey Okoye University, he has also made the presentation to the Enugu State Government.

“Few days ago I was engaging with the Godfrey Okoye University Vice-Chancellor and I came up with another crazy idea, I told him that we need to have a meeting for all universities for example in Enugu; two weeks in a month to have inter-exchange of lecturers. Lecturers in your Accountancy Department come and teach your course in ESUT, then lecturers in ESUT go to your school and teach. We will provide mobility and allowance.

“Let’s see when you get to another school if they have interactive board whether you know how to use it, you will then know be force to develop in line with the turning of digitalization across the world. And he bought into that idea and said in August we shall process it further.

“I threw that open again to the Government of Enugu state, when I was making my presentation and the SSG said ‘Ahh, a crazy idea.’ The lecturers will see need for that, so that if I have been using a 1940’s lecture note if I get to Godfrey Okoye University and use it maybe their students will expose me, which means it will charge all of us to begin to work harder as lecturers. It is because you stay without mobility in a particular location that will make you to be so academically complacent that you don’t want to refresh yourself.

“Why I presented it before the governor as part of my second year strategic plan overview for an adoption by the Government was for them to discover that there are more ideas that are already locked up in all tertiary institutions that could be tasked. We spent over four and half hours there debating on issues as it concerns tertiary education in Enugu state,” The VC concluded.

There are seven universities in Enugu state made up of one federal, two state and four private varsities.

The universities are: University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Federal); Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT and Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) and owned by the State Government

Privately owned universities include: Caritas University, Godfrey Okoye University, Renaissance University and Coal City University.
