The Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has canvassed of an inter-exchange of lecturers among all universities in Enugu State.

The VC disclosed this during an interaction with ESUT Monitor. He explained that the idea became necessary in view of the need to not only cross-fertilise ideas among the universities but it will also help in no small measure to upgrade the lecturers.

Professor Okolie added that apart from discussing the idea with his counterpart at Godfrey Okoye University, he has also made the presentation to the Enugu State Government.

“Few days ago I was engaging with the Godfrey Okoye University Vice-Chancellor and I came up with another crazy idea, I told him that we need to have a meeting for all universities for example in Enugu; two weeks in a month to have inter-exchange of lecturers. Lecturers in your Accountancy Department come and teach your course in ESUT, then lecturers in ESUT go to your school and teach. We will provide mobility and allowance.

“Let’s see when you get to another school if they have interactive board whether you know how to use it, you will then know be force to develop in line with the turning of digitalization across the world. And he bought into that idea and said in August we shall process it further.

“I threw that open again to the Government of Enugu state, when I was making my presentation and the SSG said ‘Ahh, a crazy idea.’ The lecturers will see need for that, so that if I have been using a 1940’s lecture note if I get to Godfrey Okoye University and use it maybe their students will expose me, which means it will charge all of us to begin to work harder as lecturers. It is because you stay without mobility in a particular location that will make you to be so academically complacent that you don’t want to refresh yourself.

“Why I presented it before the governor as part of my second year strategic plan overview for an adoption by the Government was for them to discover that there are more ideas that are already locked up in all tertiary institutions that could be tasked. We spent over four and half hours there debating on issues as it concerns tertiary education in Enugu state,” The VC concluded.

There are seven universities in Enugu state made up of one federal, two state and four private varsities.

The universities are: University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Federal); Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT and Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) and owned by the State Government

Privately owned universities include: Caritas University, Godfrey Okoye University, Renaissance University and Coal City University.

Barring last minute change in plans, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) will embark on a two-month break after the 2023/2024 second semester examinations.

The break which will commence from August 12 will mark the end of 2023/2024 academic calendar. The new academic session, 2024/2025 is expected to start on October 7, 2024.

Speaking on the conclusion of the new academic session, ESUT’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie said the management would continue to ensure that the school calendar is religiously followed to the end.

He noted that adherence to school calendar is a key component of sustaining the mission of the university adding that under his administration, the university will continue to run seamless academic calendars.

Will the university be shutdown during the two months break?

The university’s scribe, Mr Ambrose Ugwu said the long vacation is for students and not staff.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, Chief Ugwu explained that the management has lined up series of activities to equip the staff and train them in order to become more productive and also acquire more skills not necessarily related to their field.

ESUT Students

“During the break period, we have lined up several activities. The break is just for the students; the staff will be here. We have series of activities planned. One of them is a training workshop for ESUT members who are retiring between January 2024 and March 2025.

“We are going to have a two or three-day retirement workshop for them. It will help them to know one or two things they can engage with after retirement.

“Additionally, we are going to have staff training that includes both lecturers and non-teaching staff. Immediately the break starts, we will release a schedule detailing how everything will proceed. This workshop and training will be certificated and compulsory for all staff to join. Many departments face challenges with filing, so we need to orient our staff, especially those in clerical roles.

“We are also going to have a retreat with management and the election of the new deans on August 15, 2024. There will be a retreat for all newly elected deans and heads of departments. By then, some directors will be appointed or reappointed, and their retreat will be combined with the elected deans of the faculties in preparation for the first semester and the beginning of a new academic year starting on October 7, 2024,” he said.

The 2023/2024 second semester examinations will start on Monday, July 22nd and end on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

The place of accountability in promoting good governance in government agencies as well as effective administration and man-power management has been emphasized.

A university don, Prof Chike Ernest Nwoha stated this on Thursday while delivering the 33rd Inaugural Lecture of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, at the University’s main campus, Agbani in Nkanụ West LGA, Enugu State.

Speaking on the theme: “The audit process: Connecting Controls and accountability to enhance performance”, the Professor of Accounting opined that regular and effective auditing of companies, governments and organisations’ account systems will ensure good governance at government levels and effective administration in corporate institutions.

“Nigeria today, despite her oil and gas resources, is a poor country with 80-90 million Nigerians of estimated 130 million living in abject poverty. A lot of critical public infrastructure are in the decay and suffer from waste. Unemployment and inflation are in the double digits. Corruption continues to pose a major challenge to good governance and administration.

“Although Nigeria is practicing democracy, corruption is still eating up the funds in our country. A lot of state governors and top government officials have been accused of mismanagement of funds due largely to lack of accountability.

“Accountability is critical in good governance and administration as well as management of resources both at public and private levels because it promotes transparency and integrity. It is important to emphasize here that accountability cannot strive and be rationalized in an environment where adequate authority is not matched with responsibility”, he stated

In his remarks, ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie lauded the guest lecturer and explained that the management will continues to focus on improving the staff and students through acquisition of knowledge particularly from areas not related to their profession. He called for diversification of knowledge in order to produce a complete man ready and willing to impact in the larger society.

“I urge everyone to make themselves available for selection (for Inaugural Lecturer). We are poised to make significant changes this year, altering numerous narratives to expedite progress.

“As we approach our two-year mark next month, let us reflect on the transformation ESUT has undergone. Continual growth and adaptation are essential. We are fortunate to have brilliant scholars at ESU, let’s demonstrate our capabilities,” the VC said

The 33rd Inaugural Lecture had in attendance principal officers of the university including the Vice-Chancellor; the Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu; the Bursar, Dr Augustine Ojeh; the University Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Jacinta Eze; the immediate past VC, Professor Charles Eze: the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof Charles Chime; faculty deans, departmental heads as well as students.

The 34th Inaugural Lecture of Nigeria’s Premier Science and Technology university, ESUT is scheduled to hold in April
