The Faculty of Management Sciences, ESUT, on Thursday held its orientation programme for the 2025/2026 new students and also awarded scholarship to two best performing students in the Faculty in the current year-two class.

The orientation was designed to acquaint and educate the new students with the academic culture and ethical standards of the Faculty and the university at large with the faculty’s and departmental heads including HOD’s, Professors, lecturers and staff in attendance.

Declaring the programme open at the Prof Julius Onah Auditorium, the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Uchenna Ugwuanyi, congratulated the new students for being admitted into the faculty and urged them to pursue academic excellence.

“As you begin this new chapter, I want to emphasize that your time here will be 80% commitment to learning and research. Our faculty is dedicated to equipping you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in your chosen fields. As students of Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Mass Communication among others in our faculty, you will face challenges but our lecturers will be there to help you,” the dean said.

Prof Ugwuantyi further urged the staff to see the students as their children and consider their opportunity to impact their lives as a privilege and an honour.

The Dean also announced award of scholarship to the best performing year-one students in the faculty during the 2024/2025 academic session.

He announced the two Best Performing Students in 100-level during the last academic session to include Ogwumike Prince David from Department of Accountancy and Chioma Somtochukwu Stephanie from Department  of Mass Communication.

Each of the students was rewarded with ₦150,000 scholarship for their outstanding performance during their first year.

“Here in Faculty of Management Sciences, we have a reward mechanism for outstanding students and we recognize and celebrate academic excellence,” Prof Ugwuanyi said, and urged the current first year students to work hard and promised another award for any students who becomes the best graduating student in the faculty.

He also thanked the school Management under the leadership of the digital Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aloysius-Michaels  Okolie for their unwavering support, commitment, leadership and vision that has brought a conducive environment towards academic excellence in the university.

In his speech, a former Faculty Officer of the Faculty, Mr Paul Agu, told the students that gaining admission into ESUT is indeed an achievement, advised them on the need to obey the university rules and reminded them that ESUT has zero tolerance for misconducts.

“On behalf of the university community, I warmly congratulate you on your admission into ESUT. Gaining admission into this great institution is a significant achievement and it marks the beginning of new and important chapter in your academic journey and personal life.

“ESUT is committed to producing graduates who are not only intellectually sound but also morally upright and socially responsible. The university has zero tolerance for misconduct and any student found in breach of the regulations will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures,” Mr Agu, who stood in for the University Registrar, said.

The orientation featured interactive sessions as lecturers from the various departments within the faculty addressed the students on diverse and relevant topics as it relates to their stay in the faculty.

These discussions covered areas such as the need for discipline, course registrations processes, grading systems, dressing ethics, examination conducts, School fees payments, student–lecturer relationships, and career prospects in management-sciences-related disciplines.

Each speaker highlighted the expectations placed on students at the university level, stressing that success in management sciences requires critical thinking, continuous learning, and collaboration.

 The lecturers also advised the students to cultivate good study habits, respect institutional rules, and actively participate in academic and extracurricular activities that contribute to holistic development.

The programme engaged the students with a lot of activates including the HIV/AIDS awareness from Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) which was led by Dr. Chinawa Awoere, including Pharmacists, Nurses, and other medical practitioners with her.

The orientation concluded on a note of encouragement from the Faculty staff adviser, Dr Felix. Ugwu and Vote of thanks from the President of Management Sciences Student body, Comrade Nkwocha Chinecherem.

Agbani – In consolidation of his policy of empowering the youths in Enugu State, particularly those from Enugu North and South Local Government Areas, the member representing Enugu North and South Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Chimaobi Sam Atu has offered scholarship to Miss Nnam Chinenye Perpetual to study Pharmacy in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT.

Hon Atu who gave the scholarship through his foundation, Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation, also paid all Nnam Chinenye’s tuition fees totalling four hundred thousand naira for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Speaking in an interview on the scholarship, Chairman of the Education Board, Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation, Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa, said the scholarship is a testament to Hon Chima Atu’s strong education policy as a mass weapon against illiteracy as well as youths’ empowerment in the Enugu North and South Federal Constituency.

“She was offered a scholarship to read Pharmacy by Hon. Chima Sam Atu, under the auspices of the Education Directorate, Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation. It is a testament to his policy in using education to empower the youths in the constituency as well as eradicate illiteracy.

“During my conversation with Hon Atu, it was not difficult to observe his joy and excitement in offering the scholarship as he noted that it will change the life and social status of the beneficiary as a pharmacy student. He expressed hope that the beneficiary will do well and in turn give back to the society,” he said

The beneficiary, Nnam Chinenye Perpetual, in an interview with ESUT Monitor, expressed gratitude to Hon Chimaobi Atu and his foundation for the honour. She noted that the scholarship covers all her tuition fees – School fees, Development levy, acceptance fees – from first to final year levels

The 18-year old who graduated from the Urban Girls Secondary School, Ogui New Layout, Enugu, described Hon Atu as a good man who has been doing several things for his people in the constituency.

 “I am very happy about the scholarship. It means a lot to me because having a scholarship at the university level is not easy.

“It’s a full payment scholarship, it covers my school fees, Development levy, acceptance fee from from 100 level to final year. He sent N400, 000 which I have used to pay for my school fees and other fees.

“Hon Atu is a good man, and he has been doing a lot of good things for his constituency. I must commend him for the good works he is doing.

“My school is Enugu State University of Science and Technology, where I am studying Pharmacy. My secondary school name is Urban Girls Secondary School, Ogui New Layout, Enugu.

Miss Nnam said she chose to study Pharmacy “in order to help people who cannot afford hospital bills”

It could be recalled that Hon Chima Atu had in November last year paid the 2025 WAEC and NECO examinations registration fees of over 2000 secondary students from the Enugu North and South Constituency.

No fewer than two thousand (2000) SS3 students from 30 public, mission and technical secondary schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency yesterday participated in the 2024/2025 edition of Chimaobi Sam Atu Foundation WAEC/NECO and School Fees scholarship held across eight designated centres.

The scholarship exam which started around 8:15 am across the centres saw participating students working hard to ensure their success in the exam.

The founder of the Foundation and the lawmaker representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, Hon Chimaobi Sam Atu, who visited some of the centres, expressed his foundation’s commitment towards quality education.

According to Hon Atu, “the best gift you can give any society is to provide and promote quality education. Our Foundation is committed to this course. We are putting everything together to ensure that every child has access to quality education. For me, this is not just about giving scholarship, it promotes healthy academic competition amongst our children”.

He added that all the successful students will have their WAEC/NECO registration fees and school fees paid for by the Foundation.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the exam, the Chairman of the Education Board, Dr. Chidiebere Ezinwa, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of both the students and their school management. Dr. Ezinwa said the scholarship scheme would have serious positive effect on the psychology of students.

The Vice Principal of Federal Government College, Enugu, Mrs Kate Ifenyinwa Anwah, appreciated the Foundation for the scholarship scheme adding that the gesture would reduce the burden of many parents.

Some of the students who participated in the exam thanked the Foundation for giving them the opportunity to take part in the scheme. Many of them also expressed optimism in securing the scholarship.

The member representing Enugu North/South Federal Constituency, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, has inaugurated a seven-man education board. The board will be responsible for awarding SSCE and tertiary institution scholarships, bursaries, and other interventions in public primary and secondary schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Enugu during the week, Hon. Atu emphasized that education is a top priority in his plans because it is the bedrock of any society. He tasked the board with developing policy documents for the award of SSCE and tertiary scholarships, bursaries, and general interventions in public primary and secondary schools in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, ensuring proper and verifiable implementation.

Atu further urged the board to be transparent in their activities and ensure that deserving students receive the scholarships.

“I am a product of public school, and I know that there are many brilliant children out there that need our support. As the representative of the people, it is my job to help build education in Enugu North and South Federal Constituency,” the lawmaker said

Also speaking at the ceremony, the Deputy Chief Whip of Enugu State House of Assembly and Member Representing Enugu South Rural Constituency, Hon. Obiajulu Princess Ugwu, praised Hon. Atu for his unflinching commitment and love for education. Hon. Ugwu promised to work with Hon. Atu and the board in implementing the policies. She described the idea of SSCE scholarships as laudable because there are many parents who cannot afford to enroll their children.

Responding on behalf of other members, the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Barr Chidiebere Anthony Ezinwa, promised to work within the terms of reference to develop proper, transparent, and sustainable educational intervention policies that will radically contribute to public education need in the constituency.

Other members of the Board include, Barr. Mercy Uche Igwesi, Dr. Ekwe Okwudiri Chris, Chief Emmanue Opara, Amb. Mrs Onyinye Mamah, Mr. Ebenezer Ngene, and Mr. Sebastian Okafor.

The committee has two weeks to submit a preliminary report.
