The member representing Enugu North and South Federal Constituency of Enugu State at the House of Representatives, Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu, has congratulated the Chief Executive Officer of Geometric Power Limited, Professor Barth Nnaji, on the successful commissioning of the Integrated Geometric Power project.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday about the economic importance of the project, Hon. Atu stated that, as the first theee-in-one power plant in Nigeria, its benefit to the country and the South-East region cannot be overemphasized as it would proffer sustainable energy solutions affecting the region.

He stated that such an achievement would boost the economy of the South East and make us compete with the best in the world.

According to him, “The importance of the Geometric Power Plant cannot be overstated. It provides a reliable source of electricity, which is crucial for the economic growth and development of the region. The power plant reduces the dependence on erratic power supply from the national grid and ensures uninterrupted power for businesses and households.

“By achieving this, Prof. Nnaji has made South-East’s economy a blossoming and booming one as it would boost disruptive investment in Aba.”

Hon. Atu called on governors of the region to rally round and give the project the needed support as its contribution to the economy would also boost GDP and job creation.

“The Geometric Power Plant is also a step towards sustainable development. It uses natural gas as its primary fuel source, which is a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to oil. This helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to efforts to combat climate change.

Hon Chimaobi Atu representing Enugu North/South at the House of Reps.

“The power plant enhances the energy security of the region by providing a reliable and stable source of electricity. This reduces the vulnerability of the region to disruptions in the national grid or fluctuations in fuel prices.

“The establishment of the power plant has created job opportunities for the local population. This includes both direct employment at the plant and indirect employment in related industries and services. The power plant supports industrial growth in the region, contributing to the overall economic development of the country.

“In addition to job creation and economic growth, the power plant also contributes to infrastructure development in the region. The construction and operation of the plant require the development of roads, housing, and other facilities, which in turn support the growth of the region.

“It is important for our Governors to rally round and provide the needed support for this feat to move forward by seeing it as a South East project and not Prof. Barth Nnaji’s project.”

“This would help make it solve the needed problems it is meant to solve in the South East region.”

After commissioning the $800M Geometric Power Plant on Monday, the company will start the distribution of power to residents in Aba mega city, comprising 9 local government areas.

Aba Geometric Power Integrated Company will become the first electricity company in Nigeria to generate and distribute power on their own through gas.

Aba will be separated from the national grid. The company has laid a pipeline to distribute gas from Awaza to their station in Osisioma.

The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has called on stakeholders in the South-East geopolitical zone of the country to prioritize lasting peace as the cornerstone for unlocking economic growth and development in the region. The group made the call in its new year message.

Comprising five states – Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo – the South-East has faced historical socio-political challenges that have impeded its full economic potentials. FOSAD emphasizes that achieving sustainable peace is not solely a matter of security but a catalyst for unlocking the economic opportunities that can elevate the entire geopolitical zone ahead of others.

The group sees relationship between lasting peace and economic growth in South-East Nigeria as symbiotic and mutually reinforcing. Therefore FOSAD contends that prioritizing and maintaining peace is not only a moral imperative but an economic necessity for the region.

FOSAD believes that creating enduing peace in the region will increase investor’s confidence in business, infrastructure and human capital development, agricultural productivity, entrepreneurship and small business growth, social welfare and poverty reduction.

FOSAD urges the five governors in the South-East to form alliances, leveraging both human and material resources to ensure sustainable peace in the region.
