The Students’ Union Government (SUG) House of Parliament at the University of Jos has suspended the incumbent President Kangyang Jane Pwajok following allegations of financial misconduct and abuse of office.

She was the second female student to be elected SUG President in the history of Nigeria University system.

In a resolution passed during a plenary session on June 27, 2025, the Parliament cited the President’s unauthorized withdrawal of Union funds without the consent of the Financial Secretary and Treasurer. It was also alleged that the President held Union funds for over a month without proper remittance or disclosure, in clear violation of established financial regulations.

Further complaints, presented by the Public Relations Officer and the Secretary General, highlighted additional misconducts including abuse of office and disregard for constitutional procedures.

Following a motion duly moved and seconded, 32 out of 42 Senators voted in favor of the suspension.

Effective immediately, the President is suspended for a period of six weeks. During this time, the Vice President will assume leadership in an acting capacity to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the Union.

The Parliament reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, urging students to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue supporting the Union as it works in the best interest of the student body.

Kangyang Jane Pwajok, a medical student at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), made history in November 2024 by becoming the institution’s first female Student Union Government (SUG) president.

She emerged victorious after polling 1,682 votes, defeating her closest rival, Kiku Roy Magaji, who garnered 969 votes.

The student Affairs of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) in collaboration with the Students Union Government held an intensive
sensitization and orientation programme for the upcoming aspirants in the university.

The programme was headed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Ifeoma Okwor with the SUG president, Comr. Chiagozie Ezenwaji

The orientation was held at the Prof. Julius Onah Auditorium with attendance of over 80 aspirants from different departments and faculties

The Dean of Student affairs, Prod Ifeoma okwor in her address urged the students not to make the upcoming election to be a ‘do or die’ affair and let it be a friendly exercise

The SUG president and the Speaker equally shared talks and topics with the aspirants that was of help to them, informing the Senate aspirants of another election within the house after the general election.

“This sensitization is to make people aware of what they don’t know, and they have been picking up the forms for one position or another. We are here to give them what they should expect, the process they will go through. From now on, there will be several screenings, like security screening, and we will look at their academic records.

“Thankfully, we have the current Student Union Government telling them what to expect. We are here to sensitize them so they know it’s not an easy job, and after this, if you want to withdraw, you can withdraw, seeing that you cannot do it.

“That’s why the SUG Senate increased the CGPA to 3.5 because it takes their time. That’s why we want intelligent students to be the ones leading so they can do well in their academic programmes. This orientation will yield fruitful results for the aspirants because we are enlightening them on what they need to know, ” the Dean said

Meanwhile, screening of aspirants will hold on Wednesday May 28, 2025 at the Hall C starting from.9:30am.

…Issues Ten-point Demand, Accuses State Govt. of Neglect, Abandonment

By Amaechi Agbo

Unless drastic actions are taken timely, the seemingly peaceful and unhitched academic progress experienced in the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) could be punctured as the student body in the university, Student Union Government (SUG) has threatened to shutdown the institution in Monday, May 125, 2025 unless the increase in fees by the management is rescinded.

The Student union made the threat on Saturday in a three-page circular after their General Congress on Friday where they gave ten conditions to the management or the university will be lockdown

The memo titled “Resolution of the General Assembly Held On Friday 9th May 2025”, signed by the SUG President, Com Chiagozie Ezenwaji; the Senate President, Com Ezema Chukwuemeka and the Assistant Secretary, Com Nwafor Precious and made available to ESUT Monitor, also accused the management of the university of embezzling the development and sports fees which students have been paying without result.

The circular which was copied to the Governor of Enugu State, the Speaker of the State, the Attorney General of the state, the Vice Chancellor, Commissioner of Police, DSS and NANS, warned that non-reversal of the fees hike will warrant a total lockdown of the university

The students also accused the management and State Government of neglect and abandonment

“After the general Assembly held on the 10th May 202S at the SUG secretariat comprising of All SUG Executives, SUG  Legislative, SUG Judiciary, SUG ministers and SSAL, Faculty Presidents, secretaries and EXCOS, Departmental presidents, secretaries and EXCOS, Hostel governors, Lodge Presidents, Class reps and Stakeholders,

“The students can barely feed due to high cost of living, transporting themselves to school due to high cost of transportation. Students can barely accommodate themselves due to increase in rent that the state government has continuously neglected.

“As a state university we are not different from those staying in the forest, no light for a state owned university and its environs. No single network in the university and environment. No water but yet (sic) the state government deemed it fit that fees be added first because they don’t care about the welfare of the students.

“We are the only state university in Nigeria paying development fees that nothing has been developed since the beginning of those payments. The state government has promised and failed countless times to construct park road yet development fees has been added despite the fact that nothing has been developed with the ones paid before now.,

“The students were promised WiFi yet nothing to show for it. ESUT students for years cannot go for night classes which is a culture in universities for academic excellence because of no single light connected to any faculty auditoriums for night class, no functioning generators, no network, no wifi for browsing yet we pay 50-300k for development fees.,

“The union has been neglected for years. No bus, no funding for the daily running of her activities,” part of the circular read.

The SUG then issued a ten-point demand and gave the management 48 hours ultimatum to rescind the increment face a shut down on Monday, May 12, 2025.

“The students union government therefore stands on the following:

“No more Deans and HOD fees illegally imposed on us since last year instead of the development fees or school fees to be used, we pay extra heavy fees to our Deans and HODs for running the faculties and departments.,

“No sports fee – UNN pay sports fee because they have stadiums, track lanes with well-equipped facilities for gymnastics but here we have nothing not even a proper football field yet every student pays 5000 naira.,

“No Single increase in developmental fees – We should be talking of scrapping the 50,000-300,000 fees that has developed nothing for years only embezzled yet it has been all added.,

“No municipal services fee because the environment has lacked proper maintenance for years now

“No property maintenance fees of 50,000 – What is property maintenance and developmental fees for if not just to wicked students and for embezzlement.

“Steady electricity connected to all faculty auditoriums and departments, steady electricity within and outside the campus

“Constant WiFi and network provision, Park road construction, Provision of a brand new students union Bus, and No single increment in school/development fees.

“If the above-mentioned is not scrapped out and a memo released from the University on or before Monday 12th May 2025, the union will be left with no option but to lock all faculties, school gates, hostels and shut down every academic activity and even protest until our rights to education is protected by the state government.,

“The union through this memo urges all students and general public to not lose hope and faith that we won’t stop until our rights are taken seriously. It is not a crime to be a Nigerian, no jobs, no employments yet we can’t get the least Education to go struggle for our futures,” the circular stated.

It could be recalled that ESUT Management via a memo on April 29 signed by the Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu, announced upward adjustment in the tuition/development fees paid by the students with effect from 2025/2026 academic session.

Agbani March 10 – In a candid interview with ESUT Monitor, Chiagozie Miracle Ezenwaji, popularly known as Agozie (Joy is coming) recounted his journey from a passionate student with political aspirations to becoming the first-ever Student Union Government (SUG) President from his faculty at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

Reflecting on his path to leadership, Agozie shared, “I started having a passion for politics in my second year when I became acquainted with what was happening in the school. Despite losing the bid for Faculty P.R.O. in my third year, it was a learning experience that fueled my determination to strive for greater things.”

Agozie’s resilience and commitment to leaving a mark on campus led him to actively support previous SUG presidents while serving as Minister for External Affairs under the leadership of Comrade Donatus. His drive to make a difference culminated in organizing a successful competition during his tenor within the school community, showcasing his leadership abilities and organizational skills.

When asked about his motivation to run for SUG President after a setback, Agozie emphasized, “Failing is not the final busstop. I wasn’t discouraged by failure but saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow. My motivation stemmed from a passion to achieve greater things and make a positive impact.”

President Agozie outlined his plans to prioritize the welfare of students through an inclusive government and the establishment of a welfare committee to address students’ concerns effectively. Additionally, he aims to enhance academic welfare by organizing inter-school, interstate, and international competitions to foster student development.

In addressing social amenities, Agozie expressed confidence in collaborative efforts with the university management, government, and non-governmental organizations to secure funding for essential facilities such as electricity and water, ensuring a conducive environment for learning and living on campus.

Maintaining a balance between his political responsibilities and academic pursuits, Comrade Agozie affirmed his commitment to prioritizing his studies while fulfilling his duties as SUG President. He emphasized, “Studying hard remains my primary focus, with the political position serving as an additional responsibility. I understand that failing to prioritize academics could jeopardize both my role as SUG President and my academic pursuits.”

As Chiagozie Miracle Ezenwaji embarks on his tenure as SUG President, his journey exemplifies resilience, vision, and a dedication to serving the student community at ESUT.

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology’s Students Union Government, SUG President, Comrade Donatus Okolieuwa and other members of the students body and some students were involved in a ghastly road accident, ESUT Monitor can report.

The accident took place on Monday evening around 4pm at the Founders Boulevard road as some members of the SUG executive were rushing a sick student to the hospital.

Confirming the incident, the SUG President, Com. Okolieuwa said he was in the bus along with some of his Executive Council members after they had gone to one of the hostels to rescue an ulcer student who just returned to campus from the Christmas break.

He said the accident occured when the driver attempted to avoid hitting a motorcyclist but lost control adding that some of the students sustained minor injuries except the driver who was rushed to hospital.

A short video of the incident.

“We received a report that a student who had just returned on Sunday, who is also an ulcer patient, started manifesting symptoms. We decided to rush him to the hospital.

“As we were on our way, reaching the Founders Boulevard at the Sky Hostel, a bikeman came with speed. The driver swerved the bus to avoid hitting the bikeman, on the process he lost control of the wheel and the vehicle somersaulted.

“We give glory to God, no life was lost but some sustained minor injuries,” he said.

The President also added that the bus has always served as an ambulance to conveying sick students to hospitals or the school clinic for medical attention especially in emergency situations.

The driver of the bus was the most affected, though not terribly as he was said to have lost conscious before he was rushed to hospital where he was stabilized and discharged the following day.

The SUG President expressed glory to God for sparing the lives of all who were involved.
