In a bid to save lives and ensure sanity in all tertiary institutions, the Enugu State Government has banned all forms of reckless driving and car show by graduating students in all tertiary institutions owned by the State.

The ban was contained in a circular issued and signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Prof Nwabueze Mbah on Friday.

The Circular sent to all the heads of tertiary institutions in Enugu State such as ESUT, SUMAS, IMT, ESCET and ESPOLY noted that the ban follows a resolution of the Enugu State House of Assembly to prohibit car rides and alcoholic abuse by graduating students in the state’s higher educational institutions.

The statement titled “RE: Resolution of The Honourable House on a Motion to ban Car Rides
and Alcoholic Abuse During STUDENTS’ Graduation Celebration in the
Tertiary Institutions of Learning in Enugu State: reads

“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State received with dismay a report of a culture of alcoholic abuse and dangerous car rides in our tertiary institutions during graduation ceremonies.

“His Excellency directs that all Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Enugu State should strictly adhere to
the following resolutions of the Enugu State House of Assembly (ENHA):

  • Ban on all forms of reckless celebration during graduation ceremonies.
  • Ban on all forms of reckless car shows and driving involving hanging on vehicle roofs and
windows by jubilating students and their cohorts.

“You are hereby requested to implement the resolutions of the Enugu State House of Assembly and the directive of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State.”

It is no longer need that cases of reckless driving, acholic abuse during graduation celebrations in tertiary Institutions have caused more havocs often times leading to loss of lives, avoidable accident and traffic on major roads

Enugu – The Governor of Enugu State, Barr Dr Peter Ndubisi Mbah has flagged off the construction of a 300-bed international hospital in the state.

Flagging off the project on Monday, the Governor while performing the groundbreaking ceremony said the the project once again cements the Government’s believe in good health and well-being of the people.

Gov Mbah noted that when completed, the Hospital would have multi-specialty healthcare facility that’s set to become Africa’s leading destination for medical tourism.

“Today, we flagged off the Enugu International Hospital project – a 300-bed, multi-specialty healthcare facility that’s set to become Africa’s leading destination for medical tourism. This hospital, to be equipped with cutting-edge technology and an array of specialised services, will offer everything from cardiology, oncology, and ICU care to rehabilitation and medical engineering.

“It is a commitment to bring to an end, the need of seeking medical care overseas by our people. The facility will also serve as a training and research centre for students from our state’s major tertiary institutions, building a future of skilled healthcare professionals.

“We’re actively engaging our sons and daughters in the diaspora, inviting them to bring their expertise back to Enugu. We’re giving them our word that Enugu is open and ready for business. We have derisked investment, offering incentives to make sure their returns are guaranteed.

“Today’s groundbreaking reaffirms our dedication to improving healthcare at all levels – from primary centers and cottage hospitals to secondary facilities and tertiary institutions such as our state-owned ESUTH and SUMASTH.

“With this world-class hospital, we are fulfilling our promise of bringing advanced healthcare home. A healthier, self-sustaining Enugu State where quality healthcare is accessible to all remains our vision,” the Governor said.

The 300-bed Enugu International Hospital will on completion become a regional hub of medical tourism, offering highly advanced and specialized medical care and services.

The Vice-Chancellor, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie has canvassed of an inter-exchange of lecturers among all universities in Enugu State.

The VC disclosed this during an interaction with ESUT Monitor. He explained that the idea became necessary in view of the need to not only cross-fertilise ideas among the universities but it will also help in no small measure to upgrade the lecturers.

Professor Okolie added that apart from discussing the idea with his counterpart at Godfrey Okoye University, he has also made the presentation to the Enugu State Government.

“Few days ago I was engaging with the Godfrey Okoye University Vice-Chancellor and I came up with another crazy idea, I told him that we need to have a meeting for all universities for example in Enugu; two weeks in a month to have inter-exchange of lecturers. Lecturers in your Accountancy Department come and teach your course in ESUT, then lecturers in ESUT go to your school and teach. We will provide mobility and allowance.

“Let’s see when you get to another school if they have interactive board whether you know how to use it, you will then know be force to develop in line with the turning of digitalization across the world. And he bought into that idea and said in August we shall process it further.

“I threw that open again to the Government of Enugu state, when I was making my presentation and the SSG said ‘Ahh, a crazy idea.’ The lecturers will see need for that, so that if I have been using a 1940’s lecture note if I get to Godfrey Okoye University and use it maybe their students will expose me, which means it will charge all of us to begin to work harder as lecturers. It is because you stay without mobility in a particular location that will make you to be so academically complacent that you don’t want to refresh yourself.

“Why I presented it before the governor as part of my second year strategic plan overview for an adoption by the Government was for them to discover that there are more ideas that are already locked up in all tertiary institutions that could be tasked. We spent over four and half hours there debating on issues as it concerns tertiary education in Enugu state,” The VC concluded.

There are seven universities in Enugu state made up of one federal, two state and four private varsities.

The universities are: University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Federal); Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT and Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) and owned by the State Government

Privately owned universities include: Caritas University, Godfrey Okoye University, Renaissance University and Coal City University.
