Nigerian universities have struggled with declining academic standards, frequent strikes, and the migration of lecturers abroad. At the centre of these challenges lies an often-ignored factor: the salary structure of university lecturers.

Across higher education systems worldwide, lecturers’ welfare often plays a decisive role in determining the quality of learning students receive.

Experts argue that the importance of productivity among lecturers in tertiary institutions is critical because it directly enhances the quality of teacher training, ensuring that future educators are well-prepared.

Besides, they say that work remuneration, including various compensation packages, rewards, fringe benefits, pay, and allowances, plays a significant role in lecturers’ productivity in aspects of instruction, research supervision, publication and community service in various tertiary institutions across the nation.

Experts express worries that unproductive lecturers can significantly undermine national economic, social, and environmental sustainability by regressing knowledge.

They maintain that persistent poor remuneration amid economic crunch is fueling a massive brain drain in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, deepening crisis in the nation’s university system, where inadequate research funding have combined to erode morale and productivity among lecturers.

Nigerian University lecturers

Kayode Soremekun, a former vice-chancellor at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) expressed concern that Nigerian lecturers are grossly underpaid.

“The underpayment is such that the average lecturer is on the look-out perpetually for opportunities abroad.

“The government should tackle the problem frontally, and examine what obtains in countries such as South Africa and match same, or even go beyond it. Otherwise, we will be caught in this morass for a long time,” he said.

Nigeria is one of the countries that pays university lecturers and professors the lowest salaries on the continent, according to data on salaries of professors with less than 10 years in the professorial cadre in African public universities.

Nigerian professors earned an average of $366 (about N500,000) monthly, far behind their counterparts in other African countries.

A report, made available on the University of Ibadan’s website, indicates that assistant lecturers, arts fellows, and librarians II have a specific salary scale with minimum annual salary of N794,260.00, while the maximum annual salary is N957,402.

For lecturer II, and research fellow II, the minimum salary per annum is N897,501, while the maximum annual salary is N1,074,314. Lecturer I, and research fellow I, receive a minimum annual salary of N1.12 million, while the maximum annual salary is N1.44 million

According to the report, a senior lecturer is paid a minimum annual salary of N1. 65 million, while the maximum annual salary is N2,35 million.

Data on salaries of professors with less than 10 years on the professorial cadre in African public universities show that while a Nigerian professor earns about $4,400 annually, a South African professor takes home $57,471 yearly, more than 13 times higher.

Professors in Kenya, earn $48,000 per annum, while Gabon professors earn $29,907, Seychelles, $13,950, and Ghanaian professors receive $12,960 yearly.

Soremekun noted that a lecturer’s job is unique and must be appreciated, because the situation lends itself to comparative dynamics.

“It is an international dimension in which comparisons can be made with the salaries of Nigerian lecturers and their counterparts abroad.

“When such comparisons are made, the push and pull factors can be very enormous. To this extent, the very good lecturers will migrate to other climes, and the Nigerian social formation will certainly be the worst for it,” he said.

Stanley Alaubi, a senior lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, emphasised that improved salary can affect learning outcome positively; because a happy lecture due to a better salary will give out his best to produce a better graduate.

Alaubi urges the government to ensure that the structure of lecturers’ salary is at par with the economic reality of the country.

The Students are at the receiving end

“The purchasing power should actually be that which can take lecturers home, and a take home pay should actually take one home,” he said.

To address the issue, he said the federal government should abide by the 2009 agreement with ASUU.

Jessica Osuere, the chief executive officer at RubiesHub Educational Services, stressed the fact that poor remuneration de-motivates lecturers, increases brain drain and pushes lecturers into multiple jobs, which would reduce the time they have for teaching, research, mentoring, and feedback.

“This ultimately weakens instructional quality and students learning outcomes,” she noted.

Osuere said the core issue with lecturers’ salary structure is largely structural.

“We still run outdated salary frameworks, such as CONUASS, there’s weak funding of education, we are still battling with poor policy implementation, and lack of political priority for higher education,” she said.

She highlighted the need for regular review of salaries to reflect present economic realities.

“There is the need to link pay to performance and research output, the government should also improve funding for universities, and provide incentives such as research grants, training, housing, academic resources,” she stressed.

Nubi Achebo, director academic planning at Nigerian University of Technology and Management (NUTM), disclosed that problem is rooted in public universities reliance on the government funding, which results in inadequate funding.

Besides, he decried the fact that education does not seem to be a priority in the government’s the budget allocation.

To mitigate this, Achebo advocates public-private partnerships, alumni support, and policy reforms.

“Collaborations, and engaging alumni in fundraising efforts can provide additional funding and resources,

“Besides, we need education policy changes and increased budget allocation,” he said.

Stakeholders believe that the quality of university education is closely tied to the welfare of those who deliver it.

Hence, without a competitive salary scheme for lecturers, Nigeria risks weakening the very foundation of its higher education system.

Enugu – A University don and renowned Paediatrician at the Enugu State University College of Medicine (ESUCOM), Professor Ikenna Ndu has revealed that many newborns fail to survive their first month due to preventable causes such as prematurity, birth asphyxia, and infections.

He also noted that children under the age of five continue to die from avoidable illnesses including malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, malnutrition, sepsis and other conditions that can be effectively managed with timely intervention.

Professor Ndu made these revelations while delivering the 47th Inaugural Lecture of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), titled “From Cradle to Crisis: Advancing Paediatric Survival in Our Challenged Healthcare Landscape.” The lecture was held at a packed auditorium of the ESUT College of Medicine, Park Lane, Enugu, on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

He emphasized that the causes of neonatal and childhood mortality are not only preventable but also predictable and manageable if addressed promptly and effectively.

Professor Ndu further attributed the worsening child survival rates to delays in seeking medical care, poor policy implementation, inefficiencies within the health system, and financial barriers.

He highlighted that rural and underserved populations bear the brunt of these challenges, with limited access to skilled birth attendants, neonatal intensive care units, paediatric emergency services, and life-saving interventions.

“The persistence of common causes of childhood mortality remains an urgent concern—neonatal deaths from asphyxia, sepsis, and prematurity; under-five deaths from pneumonia, malaria, and diarrhea; and emergency room fatalities from preventable conditions all call for sustained efforts in maternal and child healthcare,” he said.

Despite the constraints in resources, he observed that advancements in neonatal and paediatric emergency care in Nigeria show that significant improvements are possible through strategic innovation, local adaptation, and strong commitment.

He also pointed out the stark disparities between Nigeria and developed nations in paediatric emergency care, survival outcomes, and healthcare infrastructure. This, he said, underscores the urgent need for equity-focused policies and the implementation of scalable, cost-effective interventions.

“Emerging technologies such as AI-driven diagnostics, predictive modeling, and personalized treatment are poised to transform child healthcare, much like gene therapy is redefining treatments for genetic disorders. Equipping paediatricians with these modern tools will be crucial,” he stated.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, encouraged the university’s professors to cultivate strong mentorship capacities, noting that such efforts will create enduring value in the academic system.

He reiterated the need to discourage merchandising of core academic activities including Inaugural Lectures in the University in order to save the image, sanctity and respect of the Ivory Tower, emphasizing that “money is not everything.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of the ESUT Inaugural Lectures Committee, Professor Mellitus Ezeamaenyi, congratulated Professor Ndu and remarked that frequent academic events like inaugural lectures have significantly boosted the university’s visibility and improved its webometric rankings.

…State Government Invites Students for Dialogue

By Amaechi Agbo

The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), has banned students’ gathering on campus and directed security agents to arrest “hoodlums” who violate the directive.

The order followed protest on Tuesday by the students led by the Student Union leaders in which they stopped on-going examinations, lectures and defence in faculties. The students embarked on the protest after the management announced upward adjustment of school fees for the 2025/2026 academic session. The decision didn’t go down well with the students.

The management issued the ban through a memo signed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie on Tuesday and made available to ESUT Monitor.

The management suspended any form of meetings and/or gathering on campus until further notice. Law abiding students are hereby directed to report any breach of peace, harassment or intimidation to the security for immediate action.

In the circular titled: “Criminal Invasion and Breach of Public Peace in ESUT”, the VC described the students’ leaders as “faceless miscreants and cultists threatening to intimidate and destabilize the peace of the University.

He noted that the students were recruited from neighbouring tertiary institutions and motor parks, masking under the SUG Leadership, issuing unguarded and scandalous memos abusing, scandalizing, disparaging and spreading falsehood against the persons of the Visitor and the Executive Governor of Enugu State, the Council and ESUT Management.

The Vice Chancellor described the SUG leadership as impostors stating that the tenure of the current leadership of the body expired in February. While debunking allegations of embezzlement by the SUG, the VC further noted that the management will commence negotiation with the new SUG Executive set to be elected in June.

“The attention of the University Management has been drawn to the activities of few former Student Union Leaders led by the immediate past President Mr Ezenwaji who recruited faceless miscreants and cultists to threaten, intimidate and destabilize the peace of the University.

“These elements recruited from neighbouring tertiary institutions and motor parks, masking under the SUG Leadership, have been issuing unguarded and scandalous memos abusing, scandalizing, disparaging and spreading falsehood against the persons of the Visitor and the Executive Governor of Enugu State, the Council and ESUT Management.

“Precisely on Tuesday, 13th May, 2025 these elements invaded the Faculties and forcefully halted the academic activities on Campus. They went further to reject all resolutions made at a meeting with the Management for peaceful resolution of the purported issues raised.

“For avoidance of doubt, Management wishes to state as follows:

1. Mr Ezenwaji’s SUG ended their tenure in February 2025 and hence are no longer in a position to speak for ESUT Students.

Students protesting on Tuesday, May 13

2. All the allegations and slander directed at the Visitor, Council and Management are not entirely true. No doubt they are playing the scripts of their desperate sponsors within and outside the University.

Given the foregoing Management can no longer tolerate this brazen show of violence and manifest threats to the lives of staff and students of the University. Arising from the foregoing, Management hereby invites the law enforcement agencies to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book. Other strategic decisions taken include:

a. The time table for elections of officers of the Union is hereby released for immediate implementation.

b. Management shall continue further negotiations on the outlined genuine issues with the newly elected executives of the SUG.

c. Again, Management shall process the contending issues to the Council for review and further necessary action

d. Management assures the staff and students of adequate security protection as they go about their legitimate duties.

e. Any form of bullying by any student shall henceforth be considered an act of terrorism and criminality; and shall be treated as such.

f. In the meantime, Management has suspended any form of meetings and/or gathering on Campus until further notice. Law abiding students are hereby directed to report any breach of peace, harassment or intimidation to the security for immediate action.

g. The University Community should be rest assured that the Government of Enugu State has zero tolerance for hoodlums, criminal elements and terrorists within and around the State.

h. Management therefore seizes this medium to apologize to the Visitor and Council for the damaging remarks, unguarded propaganda and insults extended by these elements that masquerade under the guise of Students Leaders,” the memo read.

Meanwhile, the student union leaders are about now meeting with the Enugu State Government at the Government House.

ESUT Monitor gathered that the ESUT Students’ leaders and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Enugu State Chapter were summoned by the State Government for a meeting today, May 14, 2025.

In an effort to encourage Professors to deliver their Inaugural Lectures, the management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has announced an endowment of N1.5 million support to Inaugural Lecturers.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie who dropped the cheering news to the university community on Thursday during the 44th Inaugural Lecture of the university, said the gesture is aimed at motivating the professors to see the need to present their inaugural lecture.

Professor Okolie made the disclosure while presenting his welcome addressing during the 44th Inaugural Lecture delivered by erudite Professor of Communication, Professor Linus Iloegbunam Ogbushi held at the Barr Ndubuisi Mbah Audtitorium. He noted that the gesture comprises N1, 000, 000 donation from the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa, and additional N500, 000 from a member of the Council, Engr. Dr. Innocent Akuvue.

Public presentation of a book authored by the Inaugural Lecturer, Distinguished Prof Ogbuoshi

“Inaugural lecture announces a professor’s arrival within the academics. You can be promoted as a professor but if you retire without doing inaugural lecture, you will be a retiring salary earning professor. But if you have delivered your inaugural lecture, you will now be classified as a Distinguished Professor of that University. Whatever manifest in a professor not doing inaugural lecture manifests in what the person tells the public. If you don’t have anything to tell the public, please don’t present inaugural lecture.

“We are so glad today that we are already moving so fast. Now that we have 44th – 45th and 46th  – are already waiting for the dates to come. Our prayer is that this year we must move beyond 50. ESUT is over 30 years. By the end of the year, we must hit 50 or beyond.

“As a way of encouraging professors to present inaugural lecture, management has been releasing N850, 000 to the inaugural lecturers to aid the production and process. The Chairman of Council in the last Council meeting affirmed that thenceforth he will be giving N1, 000 000 to each inaugural lecturer. As a mark of support to the Chairman, Sir Engr. I.I. Akuve added N500, 000. That means N1.5 million. So going forward, every inaugural lecturer, including the last one and today’s, will receive N1.5 million from the fund. Even if you don’t want to present your inaugural lecture, let this fund attract you to make your presentation,” the VC said.

Highlights of the inaugural lecture were presentation of certificate, award and 50 copies of the Lecture to the Inaugural lecturer, Professor Linus Ogbuoshi, as well as public presentation of a book written by the Lecturer.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCO) have donated 20 computer sets to the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT.

The Donation which took place on Thursday, was handed over to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Aloysius Michaels Okolie on behalf of the University Management

Making the donation on behalf of NNPC/SNEPCO, Mrs Catherine Osinachi Madukwe said that the 20 sets of HP Desktop Computers are donated to the University to promote academic excellence, innovation and preserve the future of the students.

While noting that ESUT was among several schools selected for the donation, she noted that NNPC/Shell and their partners are ready to provide more support to ESUT but emphasized that the existing ones must be maintained.

“We got your requests on donations for the things that you need and the Company and its partners in their magnanimity have decided to donate some sets of computers to you, 20 sets from the NNPC, Shell and its partners.

“We are reaching out to schools and it’s a pleasure to meet you today to make this donation. I am very sure that by next year, they will still do more support because they like young people, innovation, effective leadership and they like reaching out. They also want to see that when they come here in five years, the computers should be working. They emphasis on maintenance culture. When they come and see that you have maintained it well, they will give more,” Madukwe stated

On his part, the Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to NNPC/Shell and their partners for the gesture and explained that the 20 computer sets will go a long way in helping the university to expand its ICT Unit.

He explained that the University and NNPC and other donors already have existing relationship which led to the award of Honouray Degree to the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of the NNPC, Dr Osagie Okunbor during the University’s 19th Convocation Ceremony in 2023

Mrs Madukwe and Mr Ugwu are holding copies of ESUT Monitor Newspaper, the University’s flagship newspaper published by the Department of Mass Communication

“Let me thank you so much for this donation, we are very happy that you are here and we are much happier that you have been working with NNPC, Shell and other donors on this linkage.

“Recall that it was the mark your former MD was making that made the Management and Council to nominate him as one of our awardees in 2023 during our convocation. He came here for the Honourary Award because we found him worthy based on what he has been doing within the system. We are happy that today you are remembering us.

“At the ICT, we are making efforts to expand the space. The building was donated by NNPC and it’s over 10 years now. Management has been making effort to expand the ICT baseline, a five hundred computer capacity building has been completed and will be handed over to the management on 30th March.

“The space we have there in the new building, both on ground and first floors will take 500 computers each. Few days ago, we conducted sites inspection and recommendations were made.

“We have developed softwares here that will help us in CBT examinations and we can only deploy and test them when we have deployed five hundred computers so that when that is done, other universities including your organisations, can rely here for what you need because we have the expertise.

“We thank you so much, we are not relenting. The 20 computers will go a long way, if we are looking for 500, we are now looking for 480. Here we aim to achieve the best and to do that, we must maintain existing infrastructure,” the VC said.

A university lecturer, Professor Umezurike Hughes Okafor has called for the establishment of kidney centre in Enugu State.

Prof Okafor made the call on Thursday while delivering the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT’s 38th Inaugural Lecture at the College of Medicine, Parklane Enugu.

Discussing the topic: “Would you like to live a healthy life? Then keep the Purifier Purified” Dr Okafor lamented the increasing wave of kidney transplant tourism by South East residents to countries such as India, UK and US.

While explaining the concept of kidney as the body purifier, Prof Okafor opined that lack of adequate care, healthy live mechanisms has exposed the kidney to dangerous ailments which when not detected early could lead to chronic outcomes

“Recently we carried out a study among kidney transplant patients in South East Nigeria with the aim of determining the frequency and pattern of transplant in the region. We found out that 99% of patents had their transplant in India with majority of them using commercial donors. We observed that 6 were carried out in Nigeria, 4 in UK and 113 in India.

The Inaugural Lecturer, Prof Okafor being interviewed by ESUT Monitor reporters

“India was also the country with cheapest cost. This bring us to the fact that out of 126 patients studied, Nigeria had only 6. This is not as a result of lack of qualified personnel of doctors, but lack of establishing kidney centers.

“It is important to emphasize at this point and this is also a call, on the Enugu State Government to establish kidney centre in the state that will take care of kidney related issues among the people in the region, particularly. When kidney infirmities are detected earlier, survival rate is high,” he said.

Prof Okafor who highlighted instances of kidney cases he has handled both at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital and currently at the ESUT College of Medicine, gave explanations on why he chose the topic and advised Nigerians on what to do to keep the kidney healthy.

“The title of this Inaugural Lecture stems from the fact that the kidney is the purifier and contributes immensely to our healthy living. Through my sojourn in renal medicine, I have seen people with ill health, hard stories of woes, torment, truncated/unfulfilled dreams, shattered relationships, and families thrown into poverty whenever the purifier is not healthy or purified.

“To live a healthy live and keep the Purifier Purified, you need to take at least two litres of water daily, avoid high salt or sodium intake, be cautious with sugar, take fruits and vegetables, keep fit and active, do not smoke, be cautious or avoid using unprescribed medications, be sure of that herb and supplements you want to take, report any abnormality to your health practitioner,” he advused.

Earlier while declaring the lecture opened, the Vice-Chancellor, ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, said that the current management of the university pays premium attention to Inaugural lecture adding that the momentum will be sustained.

The Lecturer and wife (middle) in a picture with workers

He explained why the 38th Inaugural Lecture was held at the College of Medicine instead of Agbani, the main campus of the university.

“It is important for us to broaden our spectrum. When the decision to host the 38th Inaugural Lecture was made, some persons kicked against it, but one thing we discovered today is the fact that this auditorium has become too small to accommodate the people in it. This leaves us with the decision to now start talking about expansion.

“In UNN where I came from, if Inaugural Lecture is being held and the lecturer comes from UNEC, it holds in UNEC. If from Nsukka, it holds in Nsukka. It is important for us to balance the situation and give each campuses equal stake.

“After today, the next Inaugural Lecture, the 39th edition, will hold in two weeks’ time at Agbani. Before the end of the year, we are going to design a new robe for all Inaugural Lecturers so that only those who have delivered their inaugural lectures will wear it,” he concluded.

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA), Katsina State, Prof. Armaya’u Bichi, has alleged that some of the university’s staff were serving as informants to terrorist in the state.

Bichi, who disclosed this to newsmen in Katsina on Tuesday, said that the contacts of the suspected staff were given to a security agency for further investigation

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that suspected bandits have been attacking the area, kidnapping students and staff of the university as well as their family members.

A recent attack that led to the death of one of the university’s staff prompted his colleagues to stage a peaceful protest over insecurity.

According to the vice chancellor, the school management is doing everything possible to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, but the situation is getting worse

“This issue of informants is worrisome; therefore, we investigated those we are suspecting of giving out their colleagues and students’ information,” Bichi said.

”We have found them and handed over their contacts to one of the security agencies for further investigation.

“But we have not heard anything from the securities.

“These suspects are our staff. We have strong reasons for accusing them of being informants to bandits,” the vice chancellor revealed.”

Reacting to the situation, the Police Command in the state said that they were not aware of such an issue but promised to further investigate the matter.

The command’s spokesman, ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, who reacted, called on the public to always assist them with information that would end the security challenges.

The place of accountability in promoting good governance in government agencies as well as effective administration and man-power management has been emphasized.

A university don, Prof Chike Ernest Nwoha stated this on Thursday while delivering the 33rd Inaugural Lecture of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, at the University’s main campus, Agbani in Nkanụ West LGA, Enugu State.

Speaking on the theme: “The audit process: Connecting Controls and accountability to enhance performance”, the Professor of Accounting opined that regular and effective auditing of companies, governments and organisations’ account systems will ensure good governance at government levels and effective administration in corporate institutions.

“Nigeria today, despite her oil and gas resources, is a poor country with 80-90 million Nigerians of estimated 130 million living in abject poverty. A lot of critical public infrastructure are in the decay and suffer from waste. Unemployment and inflation are in the double digits. Corruption continues to pose a major challenge to good governance and administration.

“Although Nigeria is practicing democracy, corruption is still eating up the funds in our country. A lot of state governors and top government officials have been accused of mismanagement of funds due largely to lack of accountability.

“Accountability is critical in good governance and administration as well as management of resources both at public and private levels because it promotes transparency and integrity. It is important to emphasize here that accountability cannot strive and be rationalized in an environment where adequate authority is not matched with responsibility”, he stated

In his remarks, ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie lauded the guest lecturer and explained that the management will continues to focus on improving the staff and students through acquisition of knowledge particularly from areas not related to their profession. He called for diversification of knowledge in order to produce a complete man ready and willing to impact in the larger society.

“I urge everyone to make themselves available for selection (for Inaugural Lecturer). We are poised to make significant changes this year, altering numerous narratives to expedite progress.

“As we approach our two-year mark next month, let us reflect on the transformation ESUT has undergone. Continual growth and adaptation are essential. We are fortunate to have brilliant scholars at ESU, let’s demonstrate our capabilities,” the VC said

The 33rd Inaugural Lecture had in attendance principal officers of the university including the Vice-Chancellor; the Registrar, Mr Ambrose Ugwu; the Bursar, Dr Augustine Ojeh; the University Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Jacinta Eze; the immediate past VC, Professor Charles Eze: the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof Charles Chime; faculty deans, departmental heads as well as students.
