The Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT on Monday April 28, 2025 began the 2024/2025 Second semester academic activities after Easter break.

ESUT Monitor went round some faculties to monitor activities and can report that while lecturers are on duty, students have not yet resumed school.

On Tuesday, for instance, when our reporters visited Mass Communication Department, they witnessed Final Year students having lecture as at 11:35am, while Years 3 and 1 also had classes on the same day. However, the number of students in the classes could be easily counted at a glance with majority of them yet to resume school.

The situation is similar in all the departments visited including English and Literary Studies, ELS, Public Administration, Education, among others.

Speaking in an interview with our reporters, the HOD of Banking and Finance Dr Gabriel Anidiobu said lecturers are very ready to begin academic work but lamented that the students are nowhere to be found.

“The lecturers are in their offices and they have visited the classrooms. We have few students who are available. But by second week, we are going to have fuller classes.

“The Lecturers are not waiting for anybody. We have taking off and the week is counting ready. Students should know that attendance counts from day one of resumption,” he told our reporters in his office on Wednesday.

Students interviewed said they resumed school early to help them get ready from the rigorous academic activities ahead and commended the lecturers for ensuring that the week was productive.

Students who have Not Resumed will have themselves to Blame – Registrar

Meanwhile, the University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu has warned that students who have not resumed school are doing so at their own peril.

Mr Ugwu who stated this when our reporters visited him in his office on Wednesday, said that the University management will ensure strict adherence to the school calendar at all times.

He noted that the short Easter break was over adding that students who are on extended break should know that 75% attendance is sine qua none for examination.

“Academic activities resumed on Monday after almost two weeks Easter Break. If any student decides not to resumes, that is his/ her decision but we have taking off and the calendar is already counting. We have directed lecturers to resume classes immediately and I thank God that your reporters visited some of the departments and saw for yourself. Any students who is still at home is doing so at his peril because at the end of the day, 75% will count and before the students will be allowed to write exams.

“Additionally, let me also reiterate that it has become a norm here to follow the calendar religiously. The revised Calendar is out and the second semester may end in July. Invariably, there is no time, so students should make hair while the sun shines,” he advised.

Agbani – Perhaps, the last time a report was made about rats’ invasion was when the rodents “invaded” Nigeria’s Seat of Power, Aso Rock in Abuja in 2017 and “chased” the then president, Muhammadu Buhari out of office. Though sounded like a fairy-tale, the fact is that the rodents invaded the office and caused havoc on furniture and documents. Laughable, right?

Well, in ESUT, the excitement of returning to school after a long vacation turned into dismay for many students as they discovered their hostel rooms have been overrun by rats.

The intriguing development is the fact that the hostel rooms were locked and some barricaded with burglary, nevertheless, the rodents left trails of destruction, devouring foods, textbooks, and even personal belongings. Chairs and plastic cups were not spared either.

Evidently knowing that the occupants have left, the rats regrouped in numbers and caused students nightmarish memories to live with as students returning from their August-October vacation, had perplexing stories to tell as they arrived in their rooms with everything turned upside down

Foods including their containers, documents such as files as well as textbooks, and in some cases, cooking utensils, were not spared by the marauders

One student, who gave her name as Lizzy, living in one of the hostels inside campus, shared her harrowing experience with our reporter, “I was shocked to find my room in disarray upon return. Dust, dirt, and rat droppings covered every surface. My leftover food was gone, and to my surprise, half of my plastic cup had been eaten away.” The student expressed astonishment, having never encountered such a situation before.

Further investigation revealed that the rats had exploited the student’s absence and the hostel’s infrastructure vulnerabilities. “My door’s height allows easy entry for the rodents,” the student noted.

A thorough search for entry points yielded no visible holes, leaving many wondering how the rats infiltrated the rooms.

A plastic cup eating up by the rats

The student’s experience is not isolated. Peers shared similar tales of woes, recounting rat attacks on textbooks, files, clothing, and even a gas cylinder.

A student living in one of the lodges at Back Gate, claimed that he was bitten on the hand by a rat while sleeping, while another reported the rodents gnawing on her leg.

Health Implications

Experts emphasize the importance of proactive measures to prevent rat infestations. “Rats seek opportunities to exploit food sources and comfortable environments,” says a pest control specialist. “Keeping surroundings clean, sealing entry points, and using deterrents like rat poison can effectively mitigate the problem.”

Students are now taking matters into their own hands, adopting preventive strategies to safeguard their belongings.

“After cleaning and covering their entry spaces in my room thoroughly, I haven’t seen any signs of rat activity,” Lizzy observed.

The school administration has been urged to address the issue promptly, ensuring hostel facilities are rodent-free to prevent future occurrences. Fumigation of the hostels in campus is advocated same way landlord’s and lodge owners are advised to ensure efficient hygiene practices around their building.

It could be recalled that the outbreak of Lassa fever in the country in 2020 was attributed to rats urine and droppings when they contaminated with foods.

Students are further warned not leave their food containers open, particularly foods such as garri.

Prevention Tips:

Rats live in holes which they dug through burrowing. They always find it comfortable to live in a building inhabited by humans so as to have easy access to foods. So, how would you prevent them from invading your house?

– Keep your environment clean and clutter-free

– Seal all entry points, including holes and gaps

– Store food and trash securely

– Use rat poison or deterrents

– Regularly inspect rooms for signs of rat activity

By taking collective action, students and authorities can combat the rat menace, ensuring a safe and healthy living environment for student.

Prof Okolie who accompanied the Keynote speaker of the conference and Vice-Chancellor Summit University, Kwara State, Professor Abiodun Musa Aibinu to the conference, said that the rule on 70% attendance by students must be stringently adhered to adding that lecturers who failed to carry out their responsibilities would also face consequences.

“The 2024/2025 academic session began yesterday, on Monday and the students are back. This academic session, we will not condole business as usual. We will deepen our monitoring and assessment of ourselves, including management and lecturers, to identify areas for improvement.

“No lecturer should be absent from his assigned duty likewise, students must attend lectures at all times. The 70% attendance bemchmark must be implemented at all times, students should be serious with their studies. Any student who didn’t meet the requirement should not be allowed to be in the exam hall.

Parents, guardians and indeed, the students of Enugu State University of Science and technology (ESUT) would heave a sigh of relief as the management of the university has disclosed that school fees will not be increased in the 2024/2025 academic session.

The University Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu who disclosed this to ESUT Monitor in an interview said there is no plan to increase school fees “for now”

“No school fees increment for now; we are aware that things are hard for both parents, students, and lecturers,” he said.

When asked to explain what he meant by “for now”, Mr Ugwu added “When I say “for now,” I mean for now. Of course, you cannot increase the school fees at the middle of the session, at least for 2024/2025 academic year, because the students that resume would start paying immediately. So you cannot tell them to pay for additional fees.

“Therefore, if by now there is nothing like an increment, just let it be known that for 2024/2025 academic calendar, nobody is talking about an increment,” he concluded.

This would no doubt, be a great news to the students and parents as the expectation has been high and rumour mills circulating that the management are exploring the option of upward review of the school fees in the new session.

Earlier in an interview shortly after the second semester examinations of the 2023/2024 academic session in August, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius+Michaels Okolie told ESUT monitor that considering the economic realities in the country, there is need for a review but added that the management is sensitive to the plights of the parents and guardians who would bear the brunt.

ESUT is among the state universities paying the least amount of school fees in Nigeria with the current schools fees at ₦124, 900.

The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) this week shifted the resumption date for the 2024/2025 academic session by one week.

Both returning and fresh students of the university were expected to return to the institution for academic activities on Monday, October 7, 2024. However, in a circular issued by the university and signed by the Registrar, Chief Ambrose Ugwu on October 2nd, the new date is now Monday, October 14, 2024.

ESUT Monitor gathered that the postponement became ineluctable due to none release of list of admitted students for the new session

Speaking with our reporter in his office on Thursday, the university scribe noted that there was no way the first semester could have stated without the list of admitted students.

“The issue is that we want to release the list for admission for 2024/2025 academic session, and there’s no way you can resume while you have not released admission list,” the Registrar said.

He expressed optimism that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB would expedite action on the release of the list latest on Monday, October 7 adding that all continuing and new students will resume same day with three weeks deadline for their payment of school fees and registration

“We are hopeful that by next week, being Monday the 7th, the 2024/2025 candidates would see their names in JAMB Central Admission Processing System, CAPS and ESUT portal. All the continuing and fresh students will resume at the same time.

“We are giving them three weeks for registration and payment of the required fees. The portal will be closed on the 4th of November”.

The registrar further warned that once the portal is closed, there will be no room to reopen it and advised the students to make hair while the sun is shining. He also hinted that the management is planning to conduct the 44th Matriculation in December.

“The portal would close on the 4th of November. Once the portal closes, if you are still interested in continuing in the university, you have to write an application for voluntary withdrawal. So, we are urging the students to alert their fellow students.

“It is our hope that even before December, we would do matriculation, immediately after convocation,” Mr Ugwu concluded.

Barring last minute change in plans, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, (ESUT) will embark on a two-month break after the 2023/2024 second semester examinations.

The break which will commence from August 12 will mark the end of 2023/2024 academic calendar. The new academic session, 2024/2025 is expected to start on October 7, 2024.

Speaking on the conclusion of the new academic session, ESUT’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie said the management would continue to ensure that the school calendar is religiously followed to the end.

He noted that adherence to school calendar is a key component of sustaining the mission of the university adding that under his administration, the university will continue to run seamless academic calendars.

Will the university be shutdown during the two months break?

The university’s scribe, Mr Ambrose Ugwu said the long vacation is for students and not staff.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, Chief Ugwu explained that the management has lined up series of activities to equip the staff and train them in order to become more productive and also acquire more skills not necessarily related to their field.

ESUT Students

“During the break period, we have lined up several activities. The break is just for the students; the staff will be here. We have series of activities planned. One of them is a training workshop for ESUT members who are retiring between January 2024 and March 2025.

“We are going to have a two or three-day retirement workshop for them. It will help them to know one or two things they can engage with after retirement.

“Additionally, we are going to have staff training that includes both lecturers and non-teaching staff. Immediately the break starts, we will release a schedule detailing how everything will proceed. This workshop and training will be certificated and compulsory for all staff to join. Many departments face challenges with filing, so we need to orient our staff, especially those in clerical roles.

“We are also going to have a retreat with management and the election of the new deans on August 15, 2024. There will be a retreat for all newly elected deans and heads of departments. By then, some directors will be appointed or reappointed, and their retreat will be combined with the elected deans of the faculties in preparation for the first semester and the beginning of a new academic year starting on October 7, 2024,” he said.

The 2023/2024 second semester examinations will start on Monday, July 22nd and end on Thursday, August 8, 2024.
