In Our Part three of exclusive interview with the Six ESUT Graduates Who Bagged First-Class Honours at the Nigerian Law School, today Chiazokam Innocencia Jideofor shares her experience with us on why she achieved Second-Class Honours (Upper Division) at the undergraduate level in ESUT but made First-Class Honours at the Nigerian Law School, Abuja Campus.

Jideofor who said she didn’t study much hard during her undergraduate, added that at the Law School, the determination paved way for her to excel. The Ezeagu, Enugu State born bright scholar advised her junior students to face their studies squarely if they want to achieve distinction in their academic career.

Feeling when result was released

I was so excited and stunned to even scream I just cried and showed my parents and they rejoiced with me. I made them proud.

Chiazokam Innocencia Jideofor

Target first-class?

Yes, 100%. That was my goal. I had it in mind all through and worked towards it.

Experiences at the Abuja campus.

Abuja campus was really good to me. The environment, the hostel, the library, everything was conducive. It made reading a lot easier because I wasn’t stressed or uncomfortable.

Did you also graduate with first-class in ESUT? If no, what did you do differently at the NLS?

I didn’t make First-Class in ESUT. I made 2-1. I’d say it’s because I didn’t read as hard as I did in Law School and I also didn’t have the First-Class mind-set from the beginning. My goal then was just to not have carryover.

Law School was different, I kept saying I wanted it, I wrote it down, I prayed about it, and I put in more work than I did in the university.

What is your aspiration as a law graduate?

Law school is quite broad and the courses are very general so real clarity comes with practice. I’ll figure out the area of law that interests me most as I gain experience because whatever I say now can still change. This is a new phase for me and I’m ready to give it my all.

Message to junior ones in ESUT?

READ. Yes, there were days I did 12 to 14 hours in the Law School. Definitely not at a stretch, but you have to read to get your desired grade. I’d also advise joining group meetings and it mustn’t be the general one. Find a community of like-minded people. Don’t miss lectures, know the kind of friends you keep.

Enugu – In our part two of exclusive interview with the SIX ESUT FIRST-CLASS GRADUATES at the Nigerian law School, Tobechukwu Ngwu shares her experiences with us on how she made 2-1 at ESUT but achieved First-Class at the Nigerian Law School.

Ms Ngwu who is the daughter of former Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, ESUT, Prof Oliver Ngwu, said that at the beginning of her programme at the Nigerian Law School, Yenagoa Campus, Bayelsa State, achieving First-Class Honours was not part of her initial plans.

Describing Yenagoa Campus as “an Eden” she advised ESUT students to be more committed in their academic pursuit and prioritise their dreams.

Tobehukwu (Middle, frot row) flanked by the ESUT management and members of the Law faculty during their reception last week

While dedicating her feat to her late father, Ms Ngwu appreciated God for her stride and thanked her Family for support.

Feeling about result?

I was very happy when I got my result. It was never an easy thing but I give God all the glory. I dedicate the Honour to my late father who sacrificed everything for me and to my family for their support

Did you really target first-class?

Well, at the beginning of the journey I didn’t. I simply desired to do well and not have to return a second time. However, in the later stage of my stay, I conceived the idea and the rest is history, to the glory of God. I worked hard for it I did times tow of everything I was doing prior, academically.

Experiences at the Yenagoa Campus

Well, Yenagoa Campus was an Eden for me. God had, ahead of time, planted all the necessary resources I would need. I had an  amazing accommodation, good company, selfless lecturers and most of all, a vibrant place of worship – Chapel of Hope headed by Pastor Chukwuma Nwosu.

The journey was challenging at some point due to the intensity of the programme. It tested me emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually and financially too.

Tobechukwu (left) with the Acting Dean, faculty of Law. Dr Maria Onuegbulam and Mr Onovo Chiagozie , another First-Class Graduate from the law school at the VC.s office.

I remember falling ill and being rushed to the clinic, where I was placed on two IV drips. I wasn’t able to eat, and even when I tried, I ended up vomiting. But God healed me.

I also remember the long hours in class, sitting in uncomfortable lecture seats and returning to the hostel with neck pain. Not to mention the lengthy group meetings every evening.

I also recall that, in the early stage of the journey, we had to wait in queues for hours to buy food due to a shortage of food vendors and the large number of students to be attended to.

In all, I thank God for the victory I attained in the end.

Did you also graduate with First-Class in ESUT?

No, I didn’t. I came out with a Second-Class Upper Honours. I resolved to give it my best by embarking on the journey with renewed determination and devotion. The law school system was also helpful in making me achieve my goals.

What aspect of Law did you study, do you intend to practise?

I intend to practice in the field of Corporate and Property law

What is your aspiration as a law graduate?

I aspire to make a difference wherever I find myself and to be an influence on all those who come around me.

What are your message to your junior ones in ESUT?

My message to my juniors in ESUT is that, with God as their anchor, they can achieve all that they set their minds to do.

I will leave them with this anchor scripture, Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV):

“Prov.3.5 – Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. You also have o do you best.

Following the breaking news of Six ESUT Graduates who bagged First-Class Honours at the 2024-2025 Nigerian Law School Bar Finals, ESUT Monitor had an exclusive interview with one of the great ambassadors of the university, Mr Onovo Chiagozie Precious.

In this interaction, Mr Onovo recalled how his failed mission to achieve First-Class Houours at the undergraduate level in ESUT spurred him to aim for the coveted prize at the Nigeria Law School, Port Harcourt Campus.

Ms Ngwu and Mr Onovo on Thursday at the VC’s office

The young scholar who hails from Nkanu East, Enugu State, wishes to major in Corporate and Commercial law.

What was you feeling like when you got the report?

I felt most satisfaction and pride. Achieving a First-Class at The Nigerian Law School is a feat I have dreamed for ever since I stepped into ESUT Law Faculty and I felt proud that I achieved this heart-desire. I had a reminder on my app that displays everyday at 8am that reminded me every morning before lectures of my ultimate goal while at The Nigerian Law School. I also had a community of people that targeted First-Class as friends while on campus.

What are your experiences at the Port Harcourt Campus?

What I consider the most formative experience at the Nigerian Law School is the realization that the academic requirement was bulky, while there was relatively little time to prepare. This realization shaped my stay and experience on campus as it directly led to dropping time consuming habits which would not lead to my goal of attaining a First-Class. At The Port Harcourt campus where I attended, I had an amazing time as the lecturers were adept at teaching, the lecture hall was well air conditioned and spacious which enhanced learning, while the bar aspirants from ESUT also had a community where we exchanged ideas, asked questions amongst one another and offered a helping hand, all in a bid to ensure that no bar aspirant from ESUT was left behind.

Did you graduate with First-Class at your undergraduate level?

I did not graduate with First-Class from ESUT. I finished with a Second-Class Upper Division and emerged as the 7th best graduating student in my class of 2023. Regarding what I did differently at The Nigerian Law School, I’ll put it down to two things: clarity and determination. Having not made my desired grade at undergraduate level, I sought clarity as to my shortcomings, and with a better understanding of what led to them, I became even more determined to make a First-Class, especially since I believe I was not far off it at undergraduate level. Determination of the type which amounts to spending 15-hours out of every 24 in each day either studying, revising, working on class tasks and virtually spending all day at the library, up until closing hours.

ESUT Law Faculty Acting Dean, Dr Onuegbulam flanked by Mr Onovo- right and Miss Ms Ngwu Tobechukwu after their reception on Thursday

What is your message to junior ones?

My message to the junior ones is to cultivate a habit of studying and diligence. The Nigerian Law School can be brutal in their assessment and expectations and only a well-equipped mind can navigate the storm. Whatever grade you desire, you must commit to putting in the effort from the very first day, up until the last, there are no days off.

Would you practise?

I intend to practice as a Corporate and Commercial lawyer, while also having time and resources for litigious issues.

What is your aspiration?

My aspiration is to navigate my time at the bar successfully and God willing, to make it to the bench after years of stellar practice.

The Management of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, has celebrated six of her products for achieving uncommon feats of bagging First Class Honours from the Nigerian Law School, NLS.

The Vice-Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, who received the graduands with other principal officers of the University, stated that their excellent performances at the 2024/2025 Bar Finals Examination were testament to the level of investment by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and the Management of the University on education sector.

“It gladdens my heart that we are in the news for the good reasons. We are happy that what the present Management has started doing since 2022 when we assumed office has started yielding the desired results. I congratulate all of you for making ESUT and your faculty proud. This good news is coming at the right time when the faculty is preparing for re-accreditation exercise.

“The milestone you achieved is a testament to the fact that we merit an increase in admission quota because not all universities succeeded in having their products attaining this excellent feat. ESUT students emerged top performers in the examination. We are always very proud of our products, especially those who are excelling and projecting the good image of the University. This is the kind of news His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah wants to hear about our University justifying that the investment he is making in educational sector and other sectors are yielding results, ” the Vice Chancellor said.

The Vice Chancellor equally announced automatic employment into ESUT for any of the First Class graduands who may wish to become an academic staff after completing his or her NYSC programme.

While presenting the graduands to the Management, the Acting Dean, Faculty of Law ESUT, Dr. Maria Onuegbunam, stated that the academic milestone recorded was the first of its kind in the history of the University.

The Dean attributed the development to the improvement of academic contents and conducive learning environment by the Management of the University, adding that the domain in ESUT Website which the Management gave to the Law Faculty, enhanced their global visibility.

She congratulated the graduands, urging them to always carry ESUT flag with pride and to give back to their alma mater.
