When Hon. Dr. Felix Nnamani assumed office as the Enugu State Commissioner for Labour and Employment, he inherited a critical mandate: to transform the state’s human capital and bridge the unemployment gap. One year on the saddle, Nnamani has systematically turned that mandate into actionable policy.

From pioneering the Enugu State Employment Action Plan to executing massive job initiatives like the recruitment of 10,000 smart teachers, his administration is fundamentally restructuring how the state approaches workforce dignity and youth inclusion.

In this exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, the Commissioner opens up about his first 365 days of aggressive labour reforms, the mechanics of sustainable job creation, and his blueprint for turning Enugu into the economic hub of the South-East

The journey so far

The Hon Commissioner, Dr Felix Nnamani

There is no resting here. I was serving in the Ministry of Water Resources, and then by August of last year, I was redeployed to serve in the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Because we didn’t start early in 2023, it was kind of challenging. Every ministry at the state level has an interface with the Federal Ministry, which is the parent body. You can actually do a lot of things independently, but it must be in line with federal policy.

Policy Domestication and the Employment Council

The Employment Policy of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), but it has not been domesticated. Just last month, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment—the Minister himself, the International Labour Organization (ILO), GIZ (German Development Association), and the Labour Unions (NLC and TUC)—came to Enugu. Enugu was selected as one of the pilot states to domesticate the employment policy.

To domesticate that in Enugu, we started with a two-day engagement with stakeholders to review the action plan called SEAP (State Employment Action Plan). We looked at it together in collaboration with all Commissioners in Enugu. The Governor directed that all Commissioners, heads of MDAs, and Agencies must attend. We ended up constituting what we call the Employment Council. Part of our achievement this year is that there is now an Employment Council in Enugu State, comprising all relevant employment-generating agencies and ministries.

Cross-sectoral Job Creation

In the past, individual ministries worked in isolation. Take the Ministry of Education: I represented His Excellency today at a function where about over 2000 trained smart teachers were inducted to man the Smart Green Schools. Over 10,000 were recruited last year, and this second phase brought in more than 2000 this year. That is a programme by His Excellency to ensure clean jobs are generated in education across the Smart Green Schools scattered in all 260 electoral wards.

In the transport sector: from the ultra-modern bus terminals, the introduction of CNG buses, Enugu Air, and the concessioned international wing of the airport, clean jobs are continuously being create by His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah.

It goes the same for the health sector with the 260 Type-2 health centers, continuous recruitment and deployment of medical personnel, and the upcoming international hospital. These are huge employment opportunities created by the Governor, but previously there was no synergy or central coordination.

Centralized Job Database and TVET Reform

Even in Science and Technology—with the Tech Festival held three times now, the digital economy initiatives, the Tech Hub, and MSME support—opportunities are created, but they were scattered. The essence of the Employment Council is to bring coordination. If the press asks how many decent jobs this administration has created, I can go to a unified database and present exact numbers instead of isolated figures.

The Hon Commissioner with ESUT Monitor crew after the interview in his office

Beyond the formal sector and civil service e-governance upgrades, our focus is also on the informal sector. Education is now compulsory and free from ages 3 to 15 (Kindergarten to JSS 3) with a daily feeding programme in Smart Schools. However, youth in the informal sector who lack skills pose a major concern, as unemployment leaves them exposed to crime and social vices.

It is unimaginable that for building projects in Enugu, people still travel to Western Nigeria or Delta State to hire carpenters, masons, plumbers, or painters. The government wants to train, skill up, and certify youths between 18 and 35. With official certification, they become employable and can be engaged by the Ministry of Works to maintain public infrastructure.

We are shifting technical education (TVET and Government Technical Colleges) away from pure theory toward practical, experiential learning. Our target is to ensure our people—including undergraduates—acquire practical skills. Having parents pay university fees is no longer enough in today’s economy; everyone needs a fallback skill to survive.

Operational Challenges and Data Collection

The challenges are numerous. People mistakenly believe that the Ministry of Labour and Employment is a place to drop off a CV to automatically get a job. Far from it. The Ministry exists to formulate policies, create enabling environments, and build opportunities for engagement.

We opened an online portal for people to submit CVs so the government can interview and recruit candidates on merit from a clean talent pool. However, given the population of unemployed people in Nigeria today, managing that massive influx of applications remains a major operational challenge.

What is the unemployment rate in Enugu?

As of today, I cannot give an exact figure. Gathering accurate data is part of the policy we are currently implementing. Opening the job portal is the first step toward building a comprehensive database of unemployed citizens so we can plan effectively.

Security Upgrades and Strategic Projects

We want to ensure strong visionary leadership continues beyond 2027. Look at security: before May 29, 2023, Okpara Square in front of Government House was barricaded due to severe insecurity. Today, Governor Peter Mbah has transformed security through the Command and Control Center, advanced technology, deployment of drones, and continuous patrols by the Distress Response Squad (DRS). Incident rates like kidnapping have drastically dropped, making routes like the Enugu-Nsukka road safe for students and travelers. Additionally, the Governor established the state’s first DNA Forensics and Investigation Research Center.

Infrastructure, Tourism, and Work Ethic

In tourism, landmark achievements include the rehabilitation of Nike Lake Resort, the restoration of the iconic Presidential Hotel, and ongoing developments for two new five-star international hotels alongside the International Conference Center to host major national events.

On infrastructure, thousands of projects are documented in a public compendium. Entire urban areas like Emene, New Haven Extension, Obioba, and connecting roads to Nsukka have been paved with proper drainage systems, alongside major flyover projects across the state.

The work ethic of this administration is unrivaled. The Governor, Chief of Staff, and Secretary to the State Government (SSG) are in the office by 7:00 AM daily and frequently work past midnight to treat files and resolve state issues immediately, such as intervening in judiciary workers’ (JUSUN) welfare claims.

Addressing Meritocracy and Inclusivity

Enugu is a land of opportunity, but many young people miss available opportunities due to distractions like social media.

For instance, when Enugu Air was established and international airport concessions were announced, the Chairman of my local government, Dr. Beloved Anike, sponsored over 100 youths to aviation school in Lagos so they would be qualified when positions opened up.

The Hon Commissioner received an award from women group in ENugu

Opportunities exist across healthcare, education, and digital technology, but candidates must actively pursue them with boldness. Higher education is meant to make you confident enough to defend your qualifications and pursue roles directly, rather than waiting passively. Furthermore, Enugu State does not discriminate based on origin; non-indigenes serve in key roles, including Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants. Success depends on what you have to offer.

Framework for Vocational Training

Following the adoption of the State Employment Action Plan (SEAP) and the establishment of the Employment Council, all MDAs are submitting representatives for structured training programmes.

We are partnering with institutions such as the School of Practical Skills at Godfrey Okoye University (supported by the European Union), Ofuobi Academy (CIDJAP, anchored by Monsignor Obiora Ike), and GIZ. Once the final framework is approved by the Governor, we will launch public registration for practical training in masonry, POP installation, plumbing, welding, and other

Academia vs. Public Service

The primary difference comes down to passion. Academics is my passion—I love reading, researching, and self-development. Being in government is a call to public duty for the wider society at the state level.

While people address you as “Commissioner,” I am not moved by titles. What matters to me is the ability to touch lives, intervene for people in need, solve community problems, and extend goodwill. However, my heart remains rooted in academia.

So when are you going to return to ESUT?

As soon as His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, permits me to return, I will go back. I still attend university functions, inaugural lectures, and events whenever the Vice-Chancellor invites me. I am still part of the university and obviously i miss the classroom, however, we are still serve the people in different spheres now.

Appreciation to ESUT Monitor

I appreciate ESUT Monitor work you are giving the university global visibility with your daily reportage of activities in the university. Keep up the good work; the flag is flying high, and we remain proud of our alma mater and the state administration.

The past two years in the Department of Industrial Physics, ESUT, under the headship of Dr Chima Iheanyichukwu, were transformational.

Serving as the Head of the Department of Industrial Physics at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) from 2024 to 2026 has been both an absolute privilege and a deeply rewarding experience.

His stewardship follows a long foundation of service; between 2010 and 2024, he was privileged to work closely under three distinguished predecessors: Professor Ugwoke (2010–2015), Professor Onyia (2016–2020), and Professor Nnabuchi (2020–2024). The invaluable institutional insights gained from serving the academic leaders contributed immensely to the successes recorded during his two-year tenure.

Over the past two years, the Department underwent a massive transformation in its student demographics and physical infrastructure to support a rapidly expanding academic community.

Through deliberate repositioning, the undergraduate student population skyrocketed from fewer than 50 students in 2024 to over 200. Similarly, postgraduate enrollment witnessed a significant surge, growing from just 10 students to more than 50. To accommodate the burgeoning student population and fix urgent structural needs, the administration executed several infrastructure interventions;

Dr Chima Iheanyichukwu Abraham, Immediate past Head, Department of Industrial Physics, ESUT

Reconstructed over 80 classroom seats to support the growing student populace, made possible through the swift backing of the Faculty Dean.

Under Dr Chima, the department successfully reroofed a major section of the Postgraduate (PG) classroom following severe storm damage in April 2025. He aslo attracted a key sponsorship from distinguished alumnus Dr. Patrick Otiji to fully furnish the PG classroom, which was officially commissioned by the Vice-Chancellor on April 15, 2025.

He further attracted an alumni grant to completely rewire the Department and procure a brand-new Fireman Eco 4990ES generator, ensuring a reliable power supply for departmental activities.

Bridging the gap between rigorous classroom theory and industrial application was a central pillar of Chima’s 2024–2026 agenda. Through external funding, academic publishing, and landmark institutional partnerships, the Department’s visibility expanded exponentially. During the Year One student orientation on November 18, 2025, the Department secured a ₦1,000,000 donation from Dr. Patrick Otiji. The generous fund allocated ₦500,000 to cover the operational costs of hosting the programme, while the remaining ₦500,000 was distributed directly as welfare grants to the first 100 freshmen in attendance.

Official handover

He facilitated and signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Abuja, and ESUT on November 13, 2025. The MoU gave birth to  building of a multi-billion naira project to ESUT—the establishment of the Advanced High Energy Cosmic Ray Laboratory by NASRDA in November 2025.

For the first time in the history of the department and in the South East region of the country, Dr Chima through hosted the 15th Annual Conference of the Astronomical Society of Nigeria (ASN) from November 11–15, 2025. This historic event made ESUT the first university in the entire Southeast region to host the conference.

This mileage was swiftly followed by securing funding to sponsor selected undergraduate and postgraduate students to attend the Nigerian Institute of Physics conference at Rivers State University (May 12–15, 2025), fully covering their transit, feeding, registration, and four nights of hotel accommodations.

Signing of the MoU between ESUT and NASR in November 20025, facilitated by Dr ChimaDA

Furthermore, the past twenty-four months witnessed three separate industrial excursions to give students practical workplace exposure. Additionally, under the new Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) guidelines, the Department authored two new textbooks and successfully reviewed four existing titles.

On September 1 2026, `Dr Chima handed over to his predecessor with renewed commitment to support his administration at all times and expressed gratitude to the university management, staff and student of the department for their support during his tenure.

“This successful journey would not have been possible without collective effort. I extend my profound gratitude to our visionary Vice-Chancellor for the privilege to serve under his watch. My deepest thanks also go to the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Gabriel Ugwu, and to my esteemed departmental colleagues—most notably the senior Professors who, despite differences in age brackets, extended immense patience, commitment, and wisdom to my administration. My dedication to this institution remains unchanged. I stand fully ready to assist the new leadership in any capacity required.

“It is my distinct honor to formally hand over the leadership of the Department of Industrial Physics to my successor, Dr. Nwobodo Anthonia. I wish her a remarkably successful, peaceful, and productive tenure as she takes the Department to even greater heights.”

DuriDr Chima’s stewardship as Department of Industrial Physics in summary:

  1. Increased the total number of undergraduate students from less than 50 in 2024 to over 200 students and number of postgraduate students also increase from 10 to over 50.
  2. Reconstruction of over 80 seats for student use due to increase in students’ populations with the support of the Dean.
  3. Attracted a grant of five hundred thousand  naira only(500,000) during the orientation of year one students which was given to first 100 student that attended the orientation program on 18th November 2025 and another 500,000 for hosting of the programe all donated by Dr Patrick Otiji whose is an alumnus of the Department.
  4. Reroofed a section of Postgraduate (PG) class destroyed by rains in April 2025
  5. Attracted the furnishing of PG class by an Alumnus of the Department (Dr Patrick Otiji) which was commission by Vice chancellor on 15th April 2025.
  6. Rewired the Department and bought a brand-new Fireman Eco 4990ES generator to power the Department with a grant attracted by another alumnus of the Department.
  7. Attracted funds and sponsored some selected undergraduate and postgraduate student to attend Nigerian Institute of  Physics conference in River State University from 12th to 15th of May 2025 (this covers transportation, hotel accommodation for four nights, feeding and registration).
  8. Attracted the signing of MOU between Nigerian Space Research Development Agency Abuja and ESUT on 13th November,2025.
  9. Hosted 15th Annual Conference of Astronomical Society of Nigerian from 11th to 15th of November 2025.ESUT became the first university to host this conference in Southeast.
  10. Attracted a multibillion project to ESUT which is the establishment of the Advanced High Energy Cosmic Ray Lab by Nigerian Space Research and Development Agency Abuja in November 2025.
  11. Embarked on three different excursions to close the gap between classroom learning with the industry experience.
  12. Under my watch two new books were written by the Department and four books reviewed according to CCMAS.
  13. Facilitated partnerships with industry stakeholders, enhancing students’ practical exposure and employability.

These efforts have collectively contributed to the growth and visibility of the Department of Industrial Physics within and beyond the institution.

As Enugu State prepares for local government council elections on Saturday, September 26th, public attention remains fixed on the state’s electoral umpire. In this exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), Prof. Christian Ngwu, addresses key operational concerns -ranging from personnel training and security coordination to party participation and public skepticism.

The team of ESUT Monitor reportorial team includes: Abigeal Okedah, Ogechi Obinna, Chioma Nnabuenyi and Chimkamma Ozoagu. Excerpts

Election Readiness

ENSIEC is now 95% prepared. We are very ready for the Council Polls next week

Two-and-a-half-year on the saddle

It has not been easy. Life is full of challenges, but we have always surmounted them. It has been a major experience—not entirely smooth, but exciting, and I have learned a lot. Moving away from the classroom to take charge of this kind of assignment is not easy, but it is a very rich experience.

Personnel Deployment & Security Operations

We are deploying over 4,000 ad hoc staff. They are well-trained; three weeks ago, we trained the trainers, and just two days ago, we completed training for the ad hoc personnel themselves.

On security arrangements, we have already conducted courtesy visits and consultations with heads of security agencies, including the DSS, the Garrison Command, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). In fact, I spoke to the DCP again this morning (Friday). They are all fully briefed, and we are holding a joint security strategy briefing next week, so everything is in place.

 Voters’ Register

ENSIEC Chairman, Prof Chirs Ngwu during the interview

We don’t deal with voters’ cards. If you want to know about PVC distribution, go to INEC; that is not within ENSIEC’s jurisdiction.

However, voters will use their voter cards issued by INEC. ENSIEC does not register voters. Instead, we make use of INEC’s official voter register for every polling unit across the state.

Party Participation and Candidates

I cannot give you an exact figure of candidates who are participating in the election.

But I can tell you that seven political parties are participating: ADP, Boot Party, APGA, NRN, APP, NDC, and APC.

Apart from the APC, which fielded candidates across all wards and LGAs, the other parties only fielded pockets of candidates. Many of them did not field candidates for chairmanship positions in all 17 LGAs or for council seats in all wards.

You didn’t mention the PDP or ADC. Are they not contesting?

They are not contesting. ADC is not contesting either, but NDC is participating.

During the interview on Friday

What could be the reason major parties like the PDP opted out?

I wouldn’t know—you would have to ask them directly, as they have a better explanation. All I know officially as the umpire is that they are not on the ballot papers.

Transparency, Result Timelines, And Public Skepticism

My job is to pronounce the results as they come from the field. I won’t be in the field myself, but I have prepared a level playing field for every contestant. Watch out. Many of these political parties are not actively campaigning, so whatever results emerge from the polling units are what will be presented to the public.

How long will it take to announce the final election results?

It won’t take more than forty-eight hours

Presentation of a copy of ESUT Monitor to the Chairman

Doubts about the polls not being free and fair

That has always been the narrative in Nigeria. Even ahead of the general elections next year, people maintain that belief.

It has always been Nigerians’ story. Even the upcoming general election, people still believe it will not be free and fair, and it is because of that false concept in our head that people take advantage of to manipulate elections. Look at what happened in Osun State. The people defended their vote. So if the people can defend their votes, what stops them? Is that why many of the parties are not contesting? Probably. It is not my fault. Well, I said we provided a leveled playground, but nobody should expect that when you don’t make effort, you want to win manna from heaven. Manna no longer fall from heaven. We are committed to changing that narrative with a transparent process.‎

Continuation of Academic Service at ESUT‎

I never abandoned anybody. I’m here to serve the state. I was also serving the state in ESUT. This is an extension of my service. I’m still a staff of ESUT. I will still go back to ESUT when my tenure expires. I was teaching PhD students, master’s degree students up until this year, and nobody was paying me for that. I’m still a lecturer in ESUT.

In this exclusive interview with ESUT Monitor in his office, the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Thompson Chime, highlighted his major achievements in office. He shared insights on why he chose not to seek re-election and pledged his full support to his successor, Prof. Patrick Ejikeme.

Prof. Chime, who concluded his two-year tenure in August 2026, attributed his success to the massive support from the university management, as well as the robust cooperation of the faculty’s staff and students.

Immediate past Dean, faculty of Engineering, ESUT, Prof Thompson Chime during the interview with ESUT Monitor in his office

Excerpts from the interview anchored by a team of ESUT Monitor reporters led by Ijeoma Ugwu:

Milestones and the Alumni Mantra

When I took over in August 2024, my core mantra was to harness the potential of our alumni for the betterment of the faculty. I immediately set up a committee to drive that vision.

Unfortunately, we hit a tragic setback. The co-chairman of the committee, a prominent alumnus (Engr. Akuvue), passed away suddenly. On August 5th last year, we held a global preparatory conference for our upcoming alumni reunion. The very next day, we received the shocking news that he had gone to be with the Lord. It was a deeply sad moment for us. The faculty, the alumni, and the project struggled to regain momentum after that loss.

A full faculty homecoming would have given us immense leverage to maximize our alumni network. Despite that setback, we still achieved a great deal.

Structural and financial growth in the faculty?

That mantra yielded massive results across various departments. For instance, the current federal Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, who is a proud alumnus of this university, is currently building a 500-capacity auditorium for the Civil Engineering Department. Work is progressing daily, and it will soon be ready for commissioning.

During the interview

Because the alumni vision was clearly communicated, every department keyed into it and reaped the benefits. No university or faculty can survive without the professionals it has produced.

The Department of Chemical Engineering followed suit. They engaged their alumni, who promised to build a paint production plant for us. The Vice-Chancellor graciously allocated land for this, and the project will take off very soon. Through that same alumni drive, another set of Chemical Engineering alumni donated a robust solar power system. If you visit the department now, power is constant; they no longer rely on EEDC. Every piece of equipment requiring electricity runs smoothly.

Similarly, the Department of Computer Engineering joined the crusade. In August, the Vice-Chancellor visited the faculty to commission a brand-new solar system for the department, and he promised to upgrade it further. These are all direct offshoots of our drive to harness alumni potential.

Resolving Infrastructure and Space Challenges

When I assumed office, we faced severe power and water challenges; in fact, running water was non-existent. We had a faulty submersible pump at the time. Through the collaborative efforts of our staff members, we fixed it and restored the water supply.

However, we faced repeated sabotage. Individuals would deliberately go to the pipelines and cut them—it was that terrible. Fortunately, the Vice-Chancellor recently initiated a campus-wide water reticulation project, which has now reached our faculty. I believe my successor will leverage this infrastructure to resolve the water issue permanently.

The faculty is deeply indebted to our Vice-Chancellor. He has been incredibly supportive. Whenever you approach him with a plan that yields good value for the institution, he approves it without hesitation.

Prof Chime (middle) posses with ESUT Monitor reportorial team after the interview in his office

What structural changes did you make to improve office operations?

We looked closely at our accommodation challenges and created a separate office for the Dean’s Secretariat. Previously, the secretariat shared the same room as the Dean’s main office. Separating them has significantly enhanced workplace efficiency.

I also created a dedicated office for the Associate Dean to boost his productivity. I worked hand-in-hand with my Associate, which made a separate, functional workspace imperative.

International Partnerships and Collaborations

Yes, we are actively processing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with York St John University in the USA. The documentation and administrative processes are well underway.

We also secured a partnership with a university in China. Their delegation gave our faculty an excellent rating and expressed strong readiness to partner with us. These collaborations are driven by our alumni, who are scattered all over the globe.

Interestingly, the facilitator who brokered the Chinese university collaboration is not even an alumnus of ESUT. However, based on the stellar reputation of our Faculty of Engineering, he vowed to ensure the partnership succeeds. Initially, the Chinese institution targeted another university within this geopolitical zone, but he successfully convinced them to relocate the opportunity to ESUT. The MoU is ready, and ESUT will be the major participant. While a similar collaboration was established between that institution and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), we have already submitted our faculty resumes and are waiting to kick off full operations.

Upcoming colloquium, book donations, and visiting academic links from Japan?

The same facilitator is coordinating a major book donation to the university. It is in top gear; I have discussed it with the Vice-Chancellor, and he has granted full approval.

Furthermore, he plans to bring academic representatives from his partner university in Japan to visit us this November—we are looking at November 17th and 18th. When they arrive, we plan to host a joint academic colloquium alongside the official book donation. The faculty has been incredibly active in pulling strings to bring these global benefits to the university.

Student Development, Capacity Building, and Skills Training

We have done a great deal for our students. For instance, we partnered with an international firm, Riverbank Company. Under normal circumstances, professional training in 2D and 3D AutoCAD costs between ₦200,000 and ₦300,000 per person.

However, we attracted the company to our campus. They spent a full week conducting intensive training for our engineering students, and we even extended the opportunity to students from the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The company went as far as providing lunch for the participants throughout the week. Certificates of skill acquisition have already been distributed to all the students who successfully completed the program.

Prof Chime

Furthermore, in collaboration with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), we leveraged our network to bring the leadership of LG Electronics to the faculty. They conducted valuable hands-on skill acquisition workshops for our students.

How did organizing faculty orientation and matriculation improve the first-year student experience?

During my tenure, we successfully hosted distinct orientation and matriculation ceremonies for two academic sessions. Notably, this was the first time the faculty organized a dedicated orientation programme specifically for first-year students. It gave our freshmen a vital opportunity to familiarize themselves with their respective departments, meet faculty staff, and tour our laboratory and workshop facilities.

How did the introduction of Google’s online mentorship programme impact engineering students?

We also established a connection with Google in the United States, which rolled out an online mentorship programme for our students. The turnout was excellent, and our students gained invaluable tech-industry insights.

What steps have been taken to secure the structure donated by the alumni?

As I mentioned earlier, aggressive alumni outreach was our priority. I intend to ensure this momentum is maintained even though I have stepped down. My successor, Prof. Ejikeme, will continue with this mantra because our alumni network is vast and underutilized. We have highly successful men and women globally who are eager to give back and drive development in the faculty.

Academic Standards, Postgraduate Growth and Legacy

Prof Chime directing the VC during project commissioning in the faculty.

When I assumed office, it was common to see 10 to 15 PhD students presenting their seminars simultaneously in a single session. This was far from ideal for a rigorous doctoral defense. We restructured the process and capped presentations at a maximum of four PhD students per sitting. This standard ensures a thorough, unhurried evaluation of each thesis, which has significantly upgraded the quality of our graduates.

We also strictly tackled graduation delays. Under my watch, no department was allowed to unnecessarily retain a student for an extra month. Because we eliminated these systemic bottlenecks, word spread, and we witnessed a massive influx of postgraduate applications. Our postgraduate enrollment skyrocketed from 253 to 653 students.

How did the faculty handle the surge in postgraduate enrollment and the expansion of its academic programmes?

The faculty effectively managed this expansion while adding a brand-new department: Biomedical Engineering. This expanded our offerings to nine fully functional departments, building upon the eight we previously had.

We have truly done our part to restore this faculty to its historic peak. When you step outside this university, the Faculty of Engineering is what people talk about. We are, without a doubt, the foremost faculty in ESUT.

How does the faculty continue to build on its legacy of innovation, including past achievements in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology?

Our faculty has consistently made waves nationally. For instance, the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology being widely discussed in Nigeria today is something ESUT pioneered decades ago. As far back as the 1980s, our faculty design teams produced functional engine pistons powered by CNG.

More recently, during a major national engineering exhibition where I served as the committee chairman, ESUT took 1st and 3rd place overall. One of our students was crowned the best innovator nationwide for the project we presented.

Why didn’t you contest for second term?

There was no need, I felt I have achieved my targets. Even if that was not the case, I have done enough and need rest. The work in the faculty is enormous  but I was able to do the much I can. Again, I didn’t contest because I felt I should give room for another dean to take over. I have said it before but let me use this channel to reiterate so that ESUT Monitor will amplify it, the Deanship position should be for one term without renewal. Once you have done one term, vacate the place for another person.

Message to your successor

The faculty is our family. He was part of what we recorded during my tenure. Prof Ejikeme is a man of proven track records and I have not doubt in his capacity to do more than I did. I will also urge him to carry everyone along, go for fence mending. The election came with its expected politics but now that everything is over, it’s time for purposeful leadership and we need all hands on board. Those who contested with him have something to offer, so let them cross-fertilize ideals and make the faculty the best

He should be rest-assured of my support always. We need to move the faculty forward.

The management of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Ebeano City, has announced the appointment of Dr. Maxwell Menkiti Ngene as new Head, Department of Mass Communication, effective Tuesday, 1st September, 2026.

He replaces Associate Professor Chidiebere Anthony Ezinwa who has been piloting the affairs of the department since August 2023

Dr. Ngene’s appointment marks a homecoming of sorts. A product of the very Department he now leads, he bagged his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Mass Communication from ESUT, a rare full-circle journey from student to Head of Department, and a testament to the quality of training the institution offers.

He brings to the position a rare combination of scholarship and field experience. A Senior Lecturer and the Department’s Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator, he has spent over three decades shaping the minds of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, teaching, supervising numerous B.Sc., M.Sc. and PhD candidates, and serving as Course Adviser to the Department’s second-year students.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Ngene is a veteran broadcaster, having cut his teeth at the ATV/ABS/ESBS Enugu, and a respected public affairs analyst with the Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria (GPAAN), Enugu State Chapter.

His career also spans public service, having served as a Senior Legislative Aide in the National Assembly and Executive Assistant to a former Governor of Enugu State. For over 30 years, he has worked as a Communication for Development (C4D) and Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) consultant with UNICEF, contributing to community engagement initiatives across Enugu, Benue, Imo, and Cross River States.

Dr. Ngene takes over from Associate Professor Chidiebere Anthony Ezinwa, whose tenure since August 2023 has been marked by dedicated and transformative leadership. The Department extends its profound gratitude to Assoc. Prof. Ezinwa for his service and wishes him continued success.

As the Department turns a new page, stakeholders express confidence that Dr. Ngene — a proud alumnus turned custodian of its legacy — will steer the Department of Mass Communication into a new era of excellence.

The Department of Mass Communication at Enugu State University of Science and Technology trains students across broadcasting, journalism, public relations, and development communication, producing graduates who shape Nigeria’s media landscape.

The Vice-Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, has charged the newly inaugurated Postgraduate Students’ Union Government executives to be result-oriented and attract more development to the university.

The Vice-Chancellor who was represented by the Dean of Postgraduate School, Prof. Charles Chime, stated this during the swearing-in ceremony Wednesday at the Postgraduate Studies Hall, Ebeano City and urged them to be partners in transforming the school.

Prof. Okolie, appreciated the outgoing executives led by Comrade Chinonso Obodo for serving the student community with humility and advised the new leadership on to be collaborative in championing a new chapter for the school.

“You know what you suffered to be here. You knew what you underwent to be elected. It is not probably because you are the best, but because you are one of the best and you have defeated some people.

“What I want to say is that you have to carry everyone along. It is an exercise: you can win, you can lose. In this election, there is no victor, there is no vanquished, everybody who contested has the interest of the school at heart and we appreciate you all. I therefore urge you to build bridges, be accommodating. You will have to embrace everyone so that your government will be one to be reckoned with,” he said.

He tasked the new executives to attract developmental projects to the school.

“The other day I was telling the Vice-Chancellor to get a hostel for postgraduate students. He told me I should seek private partnership to build the hostel as a guest house, that the land is available.

“We have capable postgraduate students who can do it for us. I want to let you know that Umahi is a student in PG and he is building a hall for Engineering.  I implore the new executive to consider this. We need an auditorium, we need a library for the PG School.

He added that university management has a policy in motion to upgrade the School of Postgraduate Studies to College of Postgraduate Studies

The newly elected President stated his vision for postgraduate students of ESUT, citing that he wants to build a community that can partake in global competitiveness, welfare, and academic excellence.

Within one year, we will: “champion students’ welfare and academic ease, especially on PG verification, defense, and result issues. Ensure inclusive governance where every faculty and department is carried along. Drive digitalization and proper information dissemination for PG students. Facilitate linkages, seminars, and research opportunities that will expose ESUT PG students to the global academic world. Restore the dignity and  voice of the Postgraduate Union Government.

“We want to leave a legacy that the next administration will build on.

“To all Postgraduate Students of ESUT, I say thank you for your trust and mandate. This victory is not mine alone, it is for all students,” he said, while thanking the outgoing president and the Dean of Postgraduate Studies.

He assured postgraduate students of an open, transparent, and student-driven administration. “My doors are open. Let us join hands to build the PG community of our dreams,” he said.

The Faculty of Management Sciences has witnessed remarkable transformation under the visionary, inclusive, and purposeful leadership of Prof. Uche B. Ugwuanyi. Over the past two years, our Faculty has experienced unprecedented improvements in infrastructure, staff welfare, academic excellence, postgraduate development, digital innovation, and student support.

His leadership has been defined not merely by promises but by visible, measurable achievements that have positively impacted staff, students, and the entire Faculty community.

Major Achievements During His First Tenure

Promotion of Academic Excellence

For the first time in the Faculty’s history and in line with the Faculty’s commitment to rewarding excellence and encouraging healthy academic competition, two outstanding students were awarded scholarships of N150,000 each for the 2024/2025 Academic Session.

The scholarships were presented to the Best Year One Students with the Highest CGPA as follows:

1. The Best Year One Student in the Department of Accountancy – N150,000 Scholarship Award.

2. The Overall Best Year One Student in the Faculty of Management Sciences – N150,000 Scholarship Award.

FMS was solarised during the first year of Prof Ugwuanyi’s Administration

These scholarships were generously sponsored by the Nnaemela Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting educational excellence and supporting outstanding students. It is noteworthy that Prof. Uche B. Ugwuanyi serves as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, reflecting his enduring commitment to academic excellence, student development, and the promotion of merit beyond the walls of the University.

This initiative has not only provided financial support to deserving students but has also reinforced a culture of excellence, diligence, and healthy academic competition within the Faculty.

Leadership That Inspires Confidence

Throughout his tenure, Prof. Ugwuanyi has consistently demonstrated:

1. Transparent and accountable leadership.

3. Commitment to staff welfare.

4. Respect for merit and fairness.

5. Promotion of research and postgraduate education.

6. Peace, unity, and teamwork within the Faculty.

A Clear Vision for the Second Tenure

A second term is not about starting afresh – it is about consolidating remarkable achievements and advancing the Faculty of Management Sciences to even greater heights.

Having laid a solid foundation, Prof. Uche B. Ugwuanyi has pledged to consolidate these achievements by pursuing the following priorities:

1. Extension of the 24-hour solar power system to Block B, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across the Faculty.

2. Pavement of the Department of Mass Communication Building and its surroundings to improve accessibility and the learning environment.

9. Sustaining the culture of transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and peace.

A Response to the Collective Will of the Faculty

It is important to emphasize that Prof. Uche B. Ugwuanyi did not embark on the pursuit of a second tenure out of personal ambition. Rather, he has graciously accepted to serve again in response to the overwhelming mandate, confidence, and unanimous request of members of the Faculty Board, who believe that the remarkable progress recorded during his first tenure deserves to be consolidated.

His willingness to continue serving is therefore a response to the collective aspirations of the Faculty and a demonstration of his enduring commitment to the advancement of the Faculty of Management Sciences.

Our Verdict

1. When leadership produces visible results…

2. When infrastructure speaks for itself…

3. When postgraduate education flourishes…

4. When academic excellence is rewarded…

5. When peace, unity, transparency, and progress define an administration…

Continuity becomes the logical and responsible choice.

Prof. Uche B. Ugwuanyi has earned the confidence of the Faculty through proven performance, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

OUR SLOGAN

Proven Leadership… Visible Results… Greater Vision.

OUR COMMITMENT

Consolidating Excellence… Building the Future Together.

Support Prof. Uche B. Ugwuanyi for a Second Tenure as Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences.

Together, let us consolidate progress.

ENUGU — The Enugu State Council of Presidents-General of Town Unions has endorsed Hon. Chimaobi Sam Atu for a second term to represent Enugu North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was made during a visit to Hon. Atu by the leadership of the Council, led by Comr. Arinze Nnia Ogbodo.

Speaking on behalf of the Council, Comr. Ogbodo stated that the reason for the visit was to endorse Hon. Atu. He cited that in just one term, Hon. Atu’s performance has been visible, with impactful and people-centered infrastructural development across Enugu North and South Federal Constituency.

Hon.Atu while appreciating them stated that the visit was “deepened by grassroots support, engagement, and endorsement” ahead of the 2027 elections.

Hon. Atu expressed gratitude to the Council and all President-Generals for the trust reposed in his political mandate.

“I appreciate this overwhelming vote of confidence. However, I reminded the Council that our work is far from finished,” he said.
“The trust reposed in us is a call to even greater service. My vision and leadership goals remain committed to delivering quality representation, improving the lives of our people, and ensuring that the voices of Enugu North and South Federal Constituency continue to resonate where decisions are made.”

Furthermore, Hon. Atu visited Pottery, Iva Valley, Enugu, to inspect solar-powered street lights he recently installed in the community.

He also met with the dedicated women coordinators of the Atu Enugu Political Movement.

“It was a heartwarming interaction and an opportunity to personally thank these remarkable women for their unwavering support, commitment, and sacrifices since the beginning of this journey,” he stated. “Their resilience and belief in our shared vision continue to inspire us to do more.”

“To the good people of Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, your trust remains our greatest motivation,” Hon. Atu added.

The Student Union Government, School of Postgraduate Studies, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, has elected Comrade Ahanaonu Samuel as the new President.

The election conducted on Friday via the university’s portal saw Comrade Ahanaonu polled 450 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Okeke Sunday, who got 270.

After the election, the President-elect, while speaking with ESUT Monitor  reporters, stated that his motivation to contest came from his wealth of experience and conviction.

”I have been in the student leadership community for years in various capacities, having served as Chief of Staff to a former SUG President in my undergraduate days, and currently serving as Chief of Staff to the Zonal Coordinator, Zone F, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS),” he said.

He further emphasized that when he came for his master’s degree in ESUT, he observed that a particular department, Education, has always been in charge of leading the Postgraduate community.

”If we truly practice democracy, there must be rotation, inclusiveness and equity. Leadership should cut across all faculties and departments, not be monopolized by one,” Comrade Ahanaonu said.

”I contested last year for this same position. Due to electoral malpractice and irregularities in the online election process, I lost. A committee was set up to review the election, but till today that committee never sat. Instead of giving up, I told myself I would come back stronger.

” This time around I contested again and, by the grace of God and the support of Postgraduate students, I won.”

His motivation revolves around showcasing the leadership capacity he has built over the years and putting ESUT Postgraduate School on the world map to compete globally.”

The new president also explained his vision for postgraduate students of ESUT, stating that he wants to build a community that can partake in global competitiveness, welfare and academic excellence.

”Within one year, we will: campion students’ welfare and academic ease, especially on PG verification, defense and result issues, ensure inclusive governance where every faculty and department is carried along, drive digitalization and proper information dissemination for PG students, facilitate linkages, seminars and research opportunities that will expose ESUT PG students to the global academic world equally, restore the dignity and voice of the Postgraduate Union Government’.

”We want to leave a legacy that the next administration will build on. To all Postgraduate Students of ESUT, I say thank you for your trust and mandate. This victory is not mine alone, it is ours.”

He assured Postgraduate students of an open, transparent and student-driven administration.

”My doors are open. Let us join hands to build the PG community of our dreams,” he said.
